My Goffin's is an escape artist!

Well, looks like we got one of those Houdini Goffins I've heard so much about. LOL

He's in a huge corner cage, and I picked it partly because it has the solid feeder doors that secure with a rotating metal disk that are supposed to be "bird proof". Guess not.

I came home from work yesterday and his food dish was wide open, but he was in his cage. We decided to watch him very closely and he's opened it twice more - but of course NEVER when we're actually watching. Just now, I looked over and he's just hanging out on top of his cage looking all cool. He didn't make a sound...almost like he was being intentionally sneaky.

So, it's off to Home Depot I go to fashion some sort of chain locks that I can hook over the doors so that he can't swing them out. Don't think there's any way to padlock them the way they're shaped, so I'll have to get creative. :)

Anyone else with escape artists?

I have escape artist as well. I was in my bathroom one night and in walked Meme. She had opened her sliding door in her cage, climbed out onto her play area, then proceded to track me down. I was a so surprised...especiall since I have 3 toy poodles and a chihuahua that were in the house at the time. They were just following behind her. I went to the hardware store and bought a bunch of locks immediatly.

I had to get locks for Zazu. He is quite the Houdini himself. I bought cage locks online specifically for bird cages.

Bird Cage Lock: Childproof metal lock to keep your bird safe & secure inside her cage

I have heard that there are alot of birds that are escape artists out there ,mainly cockatoos and african greys . I have two chihuahuas and they are very loving to my bird even so though I would never allow the dog and the quaker to be unsupervised . that to me is just a big no no . I trust my chis but even so they could step on the bird and hurt him anyways so have to keep a most carefull eye on them .in any case yes have heard hundred times over about escape artists . good luck cathy english teacher getting some method to stop the escapes let us know and keep us updated .

Believe you me, I wasted no time in getting locks for my cages. Having my bird walking to find me with 4 dogs following behind her about gave me a heart attack. Although they didn't even try to do anything to her, dogs will be dogs and I don't want to take a chance.

Well, he's secure, at least for now. For each door we made a length of chain with a screw-link at each end. These fasten above and below each feeder door...so even if rotates the disk out of the way he can't push the door open. I think he's mad. LOL

He is definitely ticked...I actually feel kind of bad for him because he was so proud of himself. He looks like he's in jail now, but gotta keep him safe from the doggies when we're not home.

Tough Love! You might actually be saving the dogs from harm! If Sunshine gets down on the floor, Rocky Dog gets the heck out of the way! That beak!I can just see her getting a hold of him like she would a stuffed animal and play "Shake Shake Shake" Oh how I wish they could all just cuddle together! Maybe someday
