B49... I read about your looking for a bird in your intro type thread.

All things considered I was wondering if you had considered a Goffins cockatoo?

You are only 19, and your life will change quite often over the next 50 years. Goffins are small enough and quiet enough (for a 'too) to be ok for apartments. They are sweet, playful, snuggly, and hopelessly devoted to their owners! They rarely challenge their owners authority like macaws or amazons. They are like feathered puppies their whole lives!

The money you will save on the bird itself can go towards a top of the line cage, toys (they are chewers and need destructible toys that are replaced often), and all the other goodies we all try to work into our budgets. Yearly vet exams alone are in the hundreds.

They are the bird I put on my "If I could have any bird what would it be?" list.

Do take a look at them.

I know at your age that the "rare, cool, nobody else has one" idea sounds great... but for a lifelong companion, personality counts so much more! What good is it to have a black 'too that is mean and nasty and does not thrive? Get a NICE bird. You will be SO much happier!

The ban on import has been in place since around '86. Black palms are available in the US but they are rare and I've seen them go for $10,000.00 - $20,000.00.

I don't think you can even GET red tailed blacks as pets in the US. I know of 1 public place that has them, and thats parrot jungle. Their breeding facility does breed the birds but they don't sell them. You can get a black palm from them though....
With the rarer cockatoo species like red tailed blacks, white tailed blacks, etc, they are breeding to increase captive population numbers, not breeding for the pet trade.

You'd be lucky to find a breeder for red-tail black 'toos over there... Even here (in Western Australia) they're not too common. Hard to find, hell to care for, loud as they want to be...

I would not recommend even trying to get one for anyone who hasn't been raising not only parrots, but cockatoos for 5-10years. They're not beginner birds in any sense.
