Dolly In Motion!

Meet Moluccan cockatoo Dolly. Dolly is still a young girl and was surrendered when her owner felt that she could not keep her precious bird safe from another family member who had been teasing and hitting Dolly to release the frustration of living with a cockatoo with a big voice. Dolly was brought to us to ensure her safety a little over a year and half ago and the family decided to bring her back home after pleading with the offending family member to stop hurting Dolly. Unfortunately, old habits are hard to break and Dolly's mommy is very selfless and sacrificed her own happiness for Dolly's safety. This charming girl is now a bit defensive around people who remind her of the person who hurt her, but otherwise she is a love. She went to the vet for testing and got a clean bill of health, except for some concern about possible kidney disfunction, which we will have retested shortly. We were pleased to learn that Dolly does not have any lasting physical trauma from her bad experiences, especially since her beak had been cracked at one point. We had some concern that because Dolly is very loud and can be a handful that she might end up stuck in limbo for quite some time before finding the right home, but we are very excited to have found a very loving family that wants to adopt if everything works out right.

We asked each of the birds to write a little diary entry to share with people who might be interested in adopting. Dolly wants to share her diary entry with you, just for fun:

"Oh Dahling! I think this writing thing is just a marvelous idea! Why might you ask? Well, the answer should be obvious of course – because I get to write all about ME, Queen Dolly, the most important jewel the world has ever seen. People who meet me never fail to ohhhh and ahhhhhh over my exquisite beauty, girlish figure, and charming personality. Some days when I am in a peachy good mood, I may even hold out my royal foot for you to kiss the royal toes – but only on my good days and only when you have first rinsed with antiseptic wash. The human mouth is filthy, you know! So what does the most beautiful girl in the world do with herself on an average day? I’m a show girl and I just love to be center stage. I put all other parrots to shame with my eloquent grace. I have the most beautiful whistling voice the world has heard and have learned to create my own full length songs that will just take your breath away. I sing, dance, rock, sway, swivel, tiptoe, hop and bounce all for you, my Dahling, because I want you to know how lucky you are to have a lady with class in your presence. Queen Dolly will out show anyone, just you watch! No one even ever notices any of those other drab parrots when I am in the same room with them and you better just believe it! If you don’t believe it, I’ll just turn up the volume a little and you will change your mind when you realize that it doesn’t get any louder than Your Highness! So if I am so beautiful and so classy, you may be asking why I ended up homeless, looking for a new family to love me. This is an excellent question, and one that I could not help but ask myself as well. I think you will find that losing my home had nothing to do with me because I am perfect in every way. I met my mum when I was just a tot and fell head over heels in love with her. She is the type of Angel I knew could pamper me forever so I chose her and told her she simply must take me home to my new palace. Unfortunately when we got there, I realized that we were not alone. An interesting fellow lived there too and he wanted me to call him the King. I didn’t much care for that attitude and we never quite saw eye to eye. He believed that everything in “his” home belonged to him, including me but I didn’t want to have a relationship with him so sometimes when he would really push his limits, I would bite him. I think he could have been a decent chap, if only he had learned to ask permission before kissing the royal toes. Sadly, pleading with him did me no good so I did the most peaceable thing I could muster. I started to scream for my mum whenever I heard him enter the property. I knew that if mum could come to my side, she could keep me safe but she was not always there to answer my call. My constant screaming to let her know that I was frightened really made matters worse with the old fellow and when mum realized that I was no longer safe with her, she decided to send me away for my own good. So you see – no one would ever really WANT to be without a pretty girl like me. I would be delighted to have visitors and even more delighted if they would bring some of those little blue or orange thingies that you put inside your ears. My foster mum says that those little things enhance the capacity of the human ear so that they may be able to hear my vocalizations with more clarity. Those humans can be real clever sometimes, you know it?"

Here are some photos and videos I took a few days ago of Dolly in motion...just being her hammy, charming self.

I know they're loud, but I can't imaging ever hitting one to get it to shut up. When my girl screams, I scream along with her. It's therapeutic. I'm glad that person was responsible enough to find Dolly a home. Her whistles are adorable.
