Clever Little Act

Champ is a hammy umbrella cockatoo who arrived at our rescue this afternoon for boarding. He is very well loved and VERY spoiled. Champ likes things 'just so' and we will aim to please him while he is a guest in our home. Champ's parents went away for the weekend and were very nervous about leaving him, but we assured them that he would be in good hands. When they arrived, an adorable white baby-faced love muffin popped out of the carrier, put his head on his dad's chest and started uttering sweet words with an adorable sugary sweet little tone. We went over all the care instructions for Champ - they made him special pasta and he gets a bowl of cereal (with milk, LOL) in the morning. I'll be using almond milk as I just can't bring myself to follow instructions on the cows milk. Champ likes his cuddls and knows the ABC's. He says "I'm a good boy" when he wants out and lets everyone know he is pretty. Half way through our meet and greet, a very flighted Champ flew to my shoulder and put his adorable little head on my chest, lifted his wings and cooed at me. What a cute little baby. His parents were thrilled and told me they were totally at peace about us watching Champ.

Not more than 15 seconds had passed from the time his owners walked out the door and I opened his boarding cage door to put some fresh fruit and lettuce in his bowl and he sprung out, latched his razor sharp beak onto my hand and sunk in with force. Like other Tazmanian cockatoos - one fancy bite was not enough and he found a thumb to latch onto before I could get my arm back into his cage and shut the door. Oooooo-kay! I congratuated his majesty for a convincing preformance and couldn't help but giggle a little as I made haste to find some band aides. Cockatoos. We love them for so many reasons...good and bad.

At this time, I am really hoping that my husband has better luck with such an adorable, and very talented little actor. If not, at least his parents will be back soon enough. I have a feeling that buttering him up with almonds may not work as he is already accustomed to certain dietary standards.

Awwww Anna! He sounds adorable!!!

Some people would call him "over bonded".

He was just upset, his parents left him! Poor baby!

After all, he is not a bird. He is a human cockatoo!

Ohhhh!!! Is his family going to pay for it when they get back!!!!

Ouch! I saw a vet tech get bitten in the face by a male u2. Those guys are something else. Please be careful. You have too many little ones counting on you for care. We wouldn't want you to lose any body parts.

Here are a few pictures of the little "angel."

Here he is enjoying his cereal with "milk." (He didn't seem to notice the difference between cows milk and unsweetened almond milk. I will suggest to his folks that they switch, since they have been giving him cows milk every morning.)
