I have 2 cockatoos, 1 rb2(bella), and 1 u2(cleo), we rehommed cleo about a month ago, I wanted to comment about the too dust, there is ALOT of it, our bird room is about 20x20 I have a rabbitt air hepa filter on the wall (wall mount model, covers 700sq ft) above bellas cage and a GE hepa filter under cleos cage (it came with her cage) AND a Beam (as in beam central vac) whole house hepa filter. I clean the filters once a week with an air compressor
and let me tell you my back yard has a cloud of white powder when im done. I wouldnt say go to the extreme as we did but we now have less dust and better air quality then before we got the birds, something to seriously consider (with any bird for that matter) good luck with you decision |

first of all im new on here and happy to be here. we are owned by a 13yr old u2 we have had her now for 11yrs. at first i treated her like a bird i got tired of that in a hurry now we treat her like one of the family. when we first got her she was biting not sure what to do i finally took her wing in my gums and pretened to bite her back now im sure that wont work for all birds but mine got the message right away and dosent bite me. she gets up when we get up she eats people food i microwave the chill off then she goes under the blankets, her blankets and takes a nap for 1 to 4 hours. she is house broken tells me night night when she wants to go back to her cage needing a bathroom break or water or food. she dosent know she is a bird and we like it that way. she eats most everything we do. we do keep pellets and seeds in her cage at all times but she likes our food the most. we take her to the vet every 3mths for nail trim her vet says the only things they cant eat is apple seeds, avocados and caffine. i mean she eats eggs, chicken, steak, medium rare, turkey assorted veggies, whipped cream, sour cream ice cream everything. she is very happy with maybe a 15 or so word vocabulary. mostly night night her universal word so u have to pay attention to what she is doing at the time to figure out just what she wants. they have an intelligence of a 3yr old never getting above that so you are dealing with a 3yr old. she has us trained very nicely.

Cockatoos are a huge commitment.. Well, all parrots are but Cockatoos live a very long time.. To answer your question, my favourite large birds are African Greys. They are very intelligent. I have a U2 and she is a handful but very loving. I lucked out and adopted one that is mostly independent. She loves to play and doesn't scream much. I don't cuddle her too much but she is very cuddly. Her squawk is twice as loud as the Greys though, and when she gets upset she can really throw a fit with wings flapping and a squawk that could drive anyone nuts. some things to consider, lol
