Question Whats going on with Mugsy??

Mugsy has been adapting well so far for the past 2 weeks. I know it takes awhile to settle in. In the past 2 weeks I have only found a few feathers as far as his plucking issue goes, he has been calm and loving but today he is extremly nervous, he is chewing more on his feathers and anything around him, but mostly on himself, also he is shaking and hissing and not being so nice. I gave him some time to adapt before the vet visit being he just crossed the country, so his appointment is Tuesday at 10:00 am. What should I do for him today? I cant figure out what is making him so nervous, and why today. I feel so helpless he was doing so good by preening and not destroying his feathers. I know the feather issue is going to take time to fix if it can be fixed. I guess I am worried on whats making him so snappy and nervous all of a sudden. Also The lady I got mugsy from had a mirror in his cage, I have never used mirrors, I left his mirror in his cage, could this cause any issues? How would I know if he is sexually frustrated? We only pet his head and neck. He is having a horrible day!! Any suggestions? I tried music, Mozart, and tv, I tried quiet, singing and I have left him alone. I know you guys have good advice so please help me.

Oh yeah one more thing. I live in Michigan so it is cold, its about 70 in my house, Mugsy is half naked, could I mist him down? and would this calm him? I do not want to add to any of his stress, could he get cold and get sick?

It's great you mentioned misting. That was the first thought to pop into my head. Mist him with some warm water. Put a blanket around the cage closest to the wall or window. Is the heat coming on a new thing? Or something outside he can see? Try changing your shirt. Is your hair different? All these can effect birds. 70 degrees is fine for a bath.

Ok, I changed my shirt, my hair is the same, I covered his rather large cage and misted him. He seemed to like it. I think his skin may be dry, he came from Florida where it is humid to Michigan where my heat is dry and so is the air (I think i am on to something) What would be good for his skin that I can put into the distilled water to mist him with? My 7 year old just got his pics back from school, and this morning I put it in a frame on the tv and Mugsy is not so sure about my son....lol I think I will move that to see if that is the case. Poor Mugsy having a crazy 7 year old staring at him all day without moving. Hopefully that is it. I guess we will see.

Very good on picking up on that picture. Mix 50/50 aloe gel with water and mist bird. Has he been to vets for skin tests?

I will say this about large birds with issues. It has ONLY been a few weeks. ITS going to take years to figure him out - YEARS. Esp since he is an adult. New things will happen all the time. And dont be surprised when he lets his feathers alone for months only to come home and find half of them all over the floor again. Pluckers are VERY hard to understand.

The picture thing could have been what was bothering him. My U2 was screaming the other day and I was like, "what the heck is she bothered by???" as it was 7am...if not earlier. I realized she could see herself in the reflection of the window because it was still dark. Sometimes they are spooked by small things! I had to put a towel up to distract her from looking at herself. I have heard bad things about mirrors... My U2 acts up a lot more when she sees herself, so I have stopped showing her mirrors. Good luck with Mugsy.

I'm glad he has settled down for now. You are doing a really wonderful job. Do you have a humidifier going? I live in Mn. & know how cold it can get so a humidifier is a must. I shower Scarlet at least 2-3 days a week in winter to help with the dry skin. The aloe cream is also a good idea. Yes, i've also heard that mirrors only cause frustration at least for the larger birds.
