Talking Pablo Picasso is HOME!!

We picked up Pablo yesterday and took him straight to the vet. I was worried that he was going to be aggressive due to fear as he hadn't left his old home in the 8 years they had him. I don't think he has ever been to the vet.

Dr. Morelli opened his carrier door and he came right out. She began petting him and he dropped his head down so she could work on his pin feathers. She spent over an hour with us and was able to clip his wing feathers without toweling him! She said he is a fatty and coming home with us is the best thing that has happened to him thus far. She wants to wait on bloodwork until we have had some "nice" visits. He does have stress bars on his feathers and some "moth eaten" feathers. She said this was due to a high stress environment. Pablo couldn't have been more of a gentleman. She said is better behaved than most of her patients and that we should have years of quality life with him. I know my Yellow Collar Macaw that I had years ago would have attempted to draw blood every chance she had! Pablo is a good boy.

He didn't fight me to get out of his carrier, but he doesn't understand step up at all. I have to scoop him up a bit to get him to his cage. He is actively seeking reassurance from me, and still hissing at Derek. We are planning on talking to him a lot and both will feed with Derek being in charge of the extra special treats.

I will post pictures as we get them taken. This board is a wonderful resource!

Congrats on your new M2! I have a rehomed U2. The most important thing is to build and gain their trust. He sounds like a wonderful bird. Pics please! Enjoy.

That is a great start! Now to get his weight down a bit, and on a good diet! I can't wait to see pictures either. Keep us posted about the blood work in the future.

I was a little surprised that the vet didn't want to run a panel, but she said it is important to her that they also have a pleasant relationship and do the panel in a month or so. He weighs in at 910 grams. She said she would like to see him at 870 grams. He has been on a high fat diet- lots of seed, lots of cheese treats, nuts, and chicken drumsticks. We are adding some pellets, and lots of veggie/fruit options. So far the pellets are being rejected!! He is beginning to accept them from my hand, and roll them around on his tongue before chunking to the floor. He came out of his cage of his own volition twice, and went back in pretty quickly. The vet said to expect him to be sleepy today, and he is. Definitely worn out from yesterday. Lots of beak grinding sounds.

Such an exciting time! I just love Toos. Sammy is my best buddy. You might want to request samples from some companies and offer different pellets. Don't take his seed completely away though. He has to have something to eat. How is taking to the fruits and veggies? Offer brown riice and sprout some beans and grains.

How wonderful that he was so good at the vet!! That is always a plus not having them struggle, makes for a less stressful vet visit for both you, the vet and the bird!

Congrats on your new addition! Cant wait to see pictures!

Pablo is very upset about the offered pellets. He still gets his seed, and isn't horribly impressed with anything but the nuts for treats. We will sprout some goodies, and offer brown rice. Can they eat lentils? Going to the grocery store for more organic options tomorrow. He is a bit disgruntled this afternoon/evening. On his sleeping perch and grumpy. That's fine we have 60 plus years to get to know each other more. Good night all.

I have started a blog about Pablo on this site so as not to take up too much room in the forum. He is a charmer, and enjoying his out of cage time. He is showing off and dancing for us. Pablo has accepted everyone in the house. He is coming out of his shell and letting his voice be heard! We love him so much already it is ridiculous.
