Jenday's, from my limited experience, can be very loud - and a bit nippy, so maybe not the best for a first time bird.
However, if you're hooked, do as much research as you can before you get your bird to make sure things work out for you! I don't see the point of getting a 'beginner' bird that you're not really interested in having... Good luck!

Jenday conures usually do not make good first time birds because they tend to be very loud conures (all conures usually tend to be loud at some point in time, however sun and jendays are more known for their loudness than any other conure). If you aquire one just weaned from a reputable breeder, then it may have a greater chance bonding to you and maybe even learning to talk. How well they talk may depend on how you interact with them and talk to them on a daily basis, and how much the bird really wants to talk. Not all birds will talk, either. A minimum size cage should be around 2' square, however, we are speaking about a conure, who should have a MUCH larger cage than that since conures tend to be more active than cockatiels and need more toys to destroy which would mean a larger cage to put those toys in! The bar spacing should be about 3/4, though not bigger than 5/8s.
As far as food, I'd say that a good cockatiel mix would be fine, as long as it's not overloaded with sunflower seeds and safflowers. I don't really care for the conure mixes because they usually cary too much peanuts, sunflower seeds, safflower seeds, pumpkin seeds, or a bunch of other seeds that these birds may simply not know how to eat and may never learn how. You could also choose a good pellet diet, however I am no fan of pellets. Beyond this "base" diet, they should also be fed fresh foods daily (i.e. carrots, broccoli, potatoes, corn, apples, oranges, parsley, sprouted seeds, oatmeal, whole grain breads, cooked eggs, etc. just about anything off your plate that is not high in sugar, salt, and oils/fats). As far as toys, they need lots of them! They need toys that they can easily shred, toys to make them think, toys to make noise with, etc! You need to be sure to not get any plastic toys that can easily break, nor any light metal chains. Be carefull with any toy as some toys can be dangerous if a toe or a nail gets caught in something.

Jenday are very noisy but not as noisy as the nanday conure or the sun conure. I have a sun conure that I love. The jenday is pretty much the same as the sun except that their feathers stay green instead of turning yellow, the sun conures turn mostly yellow/orangish. My birds all eat a diet that I buy from a place called Ducotes and the food is Entree the website is Ducotes The size I buy is small conure. Then i also feed my birds fresh fruits and veggies. The reason I buy my food from this place is because I like all of the ingredients, it has pellets, dried fruits and veggies and my birds all eat it. I buy a 20# bag and it will last my birds for half a year. My birds also love their cajun cubes so I usually order some of them when I place my order. If this is your first bird I would recommend that you do your research and make sure that this is the type of bird that you want. As far as talking goes, none of the conures are excellent talkers but they can talk some, and some talk better than others. They don't talk clear though like some of the bigger birds though. Now my sun conure talks a good bit even though most reports say that they only say a few words. It really depends on the bird and the person raising the bird. Jenday's will probably talk but it will never be clear like an african grey or macaw. Where are you in GA? I know where a breeder is in FL but it would be for Sun conures or something like that. Let me know when you decide for sure what you want. You can PM me and we can chat cause I know where some of the bird shows are in your area so maybe i can help you out.

As mentioned by everyone before me, Jendays are VERY NOISY. I'm not talking about occasionally, I'm talking about on a daily basis. All of the conures mentioned are delightful little pets, but are annoying beyond description to many bird lovers due to their tendancy to shriek. They are among the most beautiful of the smaller parrots, very smart and sometimes good talkers. However, its the noise that makes them difficult to live with.
I have 9 big birds, mostly macaws, and you couldn't give me a Jenday (many have tried). There's just something about the pitch and volume that makes me nuts. I don't mean to insult those dedicated to the species, however the rescues are full of them. You might want to check out a few rescues before you go bird shopping. As a rule of thumb, if there's an abundance of a species in a rescue, its usually because of noise and behavior issues.

we have a Jenday here. he's a delightful guy, but he has a set of lungs and knows how to use them.
he's the water freak of the family, loves to shower with anyone who will take him in with them. theres times he gets 2 showers in a day. but the noise issue is a real concern. we know here that when Sylvester starts to cluck like a chicken, he is winding up for a screamfest. theres are times I pity the nextdoor neighbors. so far no complaints from them tho, but they do say it sounds like an african jungle soundtrack when all of the guys get to squawking.
