Talking Baby Sun Conure

I am the proud owner of a 4 month old Sun Conure that we have been hand feeding for a little over two months now. I keep hearing about how loud and obnoxious they can be when they are squawking. Rylie does squawk occassionally during the day, but never very loud or long and usually only when he is happy or singing to the radio. He is a very sweet and loving bird, but he is our first conure so I'm not sure if he's so sweet just because he's young and the worst is yet to come, or is it possible that we will get lucky and just have one of the quieter birds of his kind. :

He is only 4 months old, so only time and maturity will tell! Now that's usually around the age of 2 years, sometime a bit sooner, sometimes a bit later! Suns are loud, so if you know how to control the loud factor and prevent the screaming, you'll be fine!

They can, and will be incredibly loud at times. Ours is very sweet and comical as well. She talks a bit too, says "step up" and "no bite" and mumbles to herself. We are working during the day so most of her attention is in the late afternoon and evenings, weekends. When we first arrive she belts out like a siren greeting us. (whomever enters the house first) I have found that leaving her to herself for awhile instead of running to her cage every time she screams helps. Don't even acknowledge that screaming! Once she quites down, go to her/him and spend about 15 20 mins of quality time with them. Usually we can return ours to the cage and she is fine. It can become manipulative behavior and should be treated as such (unless their are other health issues) Also spend some time in the morning with her after you remove her cage cover. This helps her also, since we used to uncover her and run out the door to work. I also moved the cage towards the dining table in the evenings to let her eat something with us, inside the cage. (She would live on us if I let her.) They need interaction, a large cage. lots of toys. Keep them stimulated. I play classical music for her during the day as well. Best of luck! Its a wonderful bird to have, in spite of the potential for noise.

My Sun AND Nandy are very LOUD. When they get going, back and forth, it's almost enough to drive ya up a wall. Then Nero the nanday starts his "Whatcha doin" over and over and over.

I LOVE IT!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

we have a Jenday. when he gets to really whooping it up, he could peel the paint off the walls! but he's such a sweetie. and anyone taking a shower better count on having company. we learned it is one of two things : either never mention the "S" word(shower) or take a shower with someone doing the "conure hokey-pokey" on your head.

but really, they're such lovers. personality in a small, sometimes loud, package.

I have to agree, once you adjust to the noise level (or go deaf, which eve comes first lol) they are just soooo sweet you can't help but love them. When I first got my patty I thought I could handle the level...as they are known for being the quieter of the conures. LOL I met a rude awakening! Now I've had Harvey for just over 9 months and I wouldn't trade him. THe other night he was sitting on my shoulder hollering so I whispered to him "shhhhh quiet". Normally he whispers it back...instead he looked at me and said WHAT? lolol My suggestion...go get yourself soem ear plugs and enjoy your babies company! And I wouldn't reccomend allowing them on your shoulder, I've actually lost hearing in my ear for a few moments because of that.
