Arrow Might take Sun conure on trip to Ohio Driving Need Advice!!

Hi everyone,

I haven't posted in awhile been busy, but I'm back and I have a question. How hard would it be to take my Sun Conure "Blaze" on a /?Driving?/ trip to Ohio, I live in Florida around Daytona Beach, and it's a good 1000 miles to get there. I have another parrot a Congo African Grey "Buckeye", but he will be staying home with a family member. I'm taking Blaze with me because, the family member sleeps during the day, so I didn't want him to be upset with Blaze because he screams. So, If I take him with me I'm going to put his cage in the back, but he won't be in it. I'm going to buy him a carrier and put food, toys, and a water bottle in it for him. I will be staying at a family members house who doesn't have any pets, so he'll be Ok. Does anyone see any flaws in my plan, or can anyone offer any advice this is the first time I have ever taken a pet on a trip, and I need some help! Thank you So very much in advance,

Taylor, Blaze, and Buckeye

P.S I won't be driving so I can hold his carrier

I've taken my conure on trips with me before also. He seemed to enjoy watching the trees go by through the car windows. He did get grumpy sitting in the travel cage after a few hours though. One of my cockatiels enjoys riding also but gets grumpy about the cage too. I stop and let them out for a little while so they can stretch their wings & legs. I also make sure they have a toy or two and some treats along with their food and water.

I don't see any problems with your plans. Just make sure to have something to cover the travel cage with so that your bird does not get too much sun and he probably will not like being in the direct flow from the air conditioner/heater vents. If you are going to be holding his carrier cage, you can talk to him and play with him through the bars. I would not suggest taking him out while the car is moving, however. Something might frighten him and cause him to flutter around ... which may cause problems with whoever is driving. Plan to stop for a few minutes every few hours to let him out of his cage (you might be ready for a break also!). I'd keep him in the car though, rather than taking him inside a rest stop or whatever.

I do think they enjoy traveling though, as long as they are comfortable and can see what's going on. I was actually amazed at how well my birds took to riding in the car. They seem to be fascinated by all of the things going by them.

Enjoy Your Trip!

I take my quaker on errands with me. From house to car, he's in a carrier. I have a cage seatbelted in the passenger seat and once in the car, I transfer him to the cage so he can see. When I get to my destination, such as the bank, I put him in the carrier and take him in with me. He seems to love it and when we get home, he's usually tired enough to take a nap and I get some peace and quiet.

I think the only thing you need are earplugs...just in case. And, enough rest breaks so he can stretch. Good luck.

I have a Sun Conure and an African Grey. We have travelled in the Motor home and in the car with them. I would make sure that Blaze has his flight feathers trimmed to be safe. I will sometimes take Baba out of her cage during our trips so she can sleep in my shirt while we are travelling. I have to be careful that she doesn't see outside while we are moving because it makes her car sick and she will actually throw up. Other than that we manage quite well with both of them. When we stop I will take her out of the car for a quick poop.
Don't forget the blanket as Jamie says.

Have a safe trip.

PS: Baba doesn't squawk in the car either.

Talking Can't wait

Blaze has his wings clipped. So, I guess I'm ok to go. This is his first trip, so I bet he is excited! I can't wait to go, and he'll make it seem like home! Thank you so much for your help everyone,

Taylor, Blaze, and Buckeye
