Merlin - with pics

Here's Merlin my White-eyed Conure. I rescued her 5 years ago from a cage full of dead and dying birds (and yes I did report them and they closed down \o/)

Anyway poor lass had been very abused (broken beak, shredded wings etc) She's still terrified of men and scared of hands, nets - well most things.

Slowly she's learning to trust us and says "hello Merlin" "Come on" (me calling dog), "What you doing", "can I come out", copies my sneeze and I think she's trying to learn Purdy and "in your bed" (again another thing I say to dog lots lol)

Most of her feathers have grown back and she comes near me but I can't touch her without biting - still working on that. Anyway here's some pics of her.

On her phone as we say. She sits for hours like this.

I really think this pic is funny. I got too close to her so she threatened me before biting, which made her hit Meg who then bit her, which made her tail hit Berty (RIP) who then headbutted Meg.

They do get along with each other tho (or should I say Merlin is slave to Meg)

So if you have a rescue that's not tame - stick with them as they might surprise you one day.

That's just so cool! Thanks for sharing. How long did it take Merlin to warm up to your tiels? Is it common for a white eyed to have all those red feathers?

I love all your pics. That is great you are making progress with Merlin. It sure can be a long haul on these birds who have had an exceptionally bad life. Good work.

Merlin is a cutie!!

Ooo I think all in all it's taken her 2 years to acept the teils. Then she started stealing hand rearing formular when I had to handrear Berty and then she started feeding them for me.

Budgies she still hates tho so have to keep them seperate. The Red rump she's slowly warming up to but still dosen't trust him (feelings mutural) there actually pottering about floor together near my feet atm.

It's like she WANTS to be in the flock and mix with us and she has asked for head scratches (from watching meg as for them) BUT she still dosen't trust us enougth to give them to her or touch her.

I'm sure it'll come with time but even if it dosen't I don't mind as long as she's happy and pain free. You can see where her beak was broken in the pics and the new bit of beak.

Just like to post this for people not to give up hope!

Oops forgot to add that the amount of red vaires from bird to bird in this species (of which there's 3 subspecies I think, I had to find out her breed from DEFRA) Not sure which subspecies she is but she's big for a conure and her scream can be heard 2 blocks away.

gosh, makes my heart so sad when they have come from such a bad and ugly background -- and warms my heart to no end when they are rescued and given a second chance at a happy life.

Beautiful pics!

Awwww. That is such a sweet story and I am so happy that Merlin found his forever home in you :) I do love the "action" shot where everyone is upset!

Thanks guys it really warms my heart to hear this and know I'm doing something right. She (we call her she but could be he lol) was a completly unexpected addition to the household and I really wasn't ready for a parrot.

Luckily having rescued Meg unexpectidly when I was still at school has taught me to adapt very quickly and keep a bit of cash to side for emergancy cage and food buying ;)
