Exclamation New Green Cheeked Conure owner. HELP!

I just got yesterday a Green Cheeked Conure. He is about 2 years old, from a pet store here in Northern California. He hatched in the pet store and was in a clutch with one other. He is very skiddish and I am looking for advice on this.

I am wondering how I calm him down, to not be skiddish. So evenutally I can get him to perch onto my finger or hand. I have never had a parrot but have had budgies. Big difference I suppose. What is the basics I need to know to achieve this. What do I need to do. HELP.

Hi,
You need to let him be. Allow him time to settle down. He needs to begin to see a routine in your situation and that will take a little time. Remember that he has just been removed from someplace that he is very familiar with and placed in new surroundings. The process could take from afew days to a few months depending upon the bird.

You must progress at the birds pace and not a pace that you think should be correct. Once he/she settles in, Green Cheeks are a riot. They are very fun loving. It all takes time so patience is the key. Just talk to him as you pass by. Sit in front of his cage. Give him some quality time so that he does not view his new surroundings as threatening and all will be well.

Have Fun,
Bill

I agree with birdscomefirst that you may need to just give him time. I had the same problem when I brought my quaker home. He was in the pet store for a while before we bough him, and it actually took a few months for him to get really used to us. He's still very shy, but he's gone from biting and screaming to being very cuddly now.
