Sun Conure Impending adoption- please help

Up until now I have only had tiels and I am currently looking at a 4 month old sun conure to adopt.

However, his living situation is poor seeing as he is on a hot screen room in a trailer with a woman who smokes.

I have to admit that there is somewhat of an intimidation factor in taking on this bird. not only because of his greater size ( meaning a larger beak!) but also because of the famed Sun conure screech considering I have a roomate.

This bird was supposadly not raised around other conures so is it possible that he didn't pick up the shreek? He seemed quiet when I visited and a little skittish but I think that was justified.

I guess what I'm asking is- in a conure owner's opinion with what I've said- do you think I can expect a lot of screaming ( I know it varies with the bird) and, besides sexual maturity, are sun's known for being nippy?

Thanks everyone!

That is normal vocalization for a Sun. They are loud and some tend to be nippy. Each bird is different and the generalization is basically a guideline of what to expect. If the vocalization will be a problem then don't get the bird.

It is more likely to scream than not for at least the first month. That's why the rescues are full of them.

My sun who is now living with my cousin just upstairs from me was SILENT for the first month or so after I got him. He was also an only bird at the time. He does do the screech now but it's important to remember that it's not all day long and not constant, but when he does it, it's loud and annoying, especially if you're on the phone LOL. He was handfed and we socailized him well so he's not nippy. He's very sweet, cuddly and playful

I've had my sun Conure for over 5 years and she can at times be noisy but it is limited to the morning when she wants up and her morning breakfast and then to snuggle and of course in the evening when she wants to go to her cage to sleep. She is not as loud as Moosie's imitation of her. If noise of any kind is a problem then I would suggest that you don't consider a bird. Maybe an aquarium would be a better choice.

I sympathize about the room-mate issues. I think you would probably get her if you lived alone. However your room-mate may be a big help if they can get involved. On the other hand your room-mate may make the bird an issue. The bird may have more company with two people. If you get some guidance with training I think you will have a good chance. Does the bird relate to you well?

I don't have any experience with Suns - but I know I would not want my ears ringing - so everyone has a tolerance issue. Is there some place you could go to hear the type of bird, if the one you’re looking at hasn’t found its voice yet? I’d take your room-mate too.

I was quite schizo the days up to getting my fid – I was tortured with questions about whether I was being selfish, was I being immature to have such a craving, what was really going on, oh the poor little fellow at the shelter …… my brain was off & running.

I think you need some support around you. You will need it if you ever need to go on holiday or anywhere for a few days – your friends & family will have to be helpful – or have enough money for a vets/bird sitter. My student has a network of bird owning friends – this seems to be the popular choice. Look into a Bird Club perhaps.
Good Luck
