Me, myself.....I couldn't have left that bird there. If they aren't going to clip its wings, its not gonna get handled and that is just plain wrong because its obvious he is craving human attention. My Asia was at Petco for 8 months and not handled. They told me she was mean, probably told everyone that which is why she was there so long. They marked her price down, I took her. She is the SWEETEST of all of my 3 GCC's. So, I hope this little one gets a good home. I would have taken it, worse case you give it a good home for the time being until you can find it a permenant home yourself.

As most of you know, all of my conures came from Petco. It took me awhile, but I learned last week I have to stay out of there. I fall in love WAY too easy and hate that these birds just sit there for months. The economy like it is, people aren't buying expensive birds. It really makes me sad.....

I too probably would have paid the ransom. Especially if it was as sweet as the original poster described. I am a sucker like that.

Gooood eye emmilyy! It usually warns you that a thread is old and asks if you really want to post.

I knew I hadn't seen those people around for a long time! LOL

It only warns you if you are the first to reply to an old thread. After that, it doesn't, unless the thread hasn't had any replies to it in a long while.

I kept wondering "Who are all these people??" That explains it! The first GCC I ever saw was very interactive like that. I went into the petstore and played with it every chance I got. It was like 3-4 years ago. They said they'd be getting another one in, but never did. I was in love, but I wasn't ready for a bird, and didn't know much about them at all. When I found Rayne (same chain, different store) I took her home that day. She was the same way, very interactive, trying to get my attention... and she still is. Rico did the same thing. I've played with other GCC's and Black Capped, and Sun through the glass... they were all tumbling over and being silly. However, they charge too much. Luckily the Sun is still a baby. I was lucky that Rico and Rayne were handled and socialized, and taught to step up before I got them. They've been really great. However, knowing this birds situation, I admit, I would have left with it. It showed all the signs of being friendly and interactive. I couldn't have left it. It wasn't any more than what I paid for Rayne. That being said, if they didn't have the means to keep the bird clipped to be handled, then they shouldn't be selling them in the first place!

I've got 3 GCCs. They should never be kept singly, IMO. They DO nip. It's just in their nature. They're plucky little boogers. They pretty much have to be because they're so small. I would never catagorically recommend them for kids for that reason. But then, if your child works well with the bird (and if the bird decides it likes her) she may win it's heart, in which case it will be very good to her. Which is not to say that it won't occassionally still nip her. (Thankfully their beaks are small.) They are possessive of their person, though so be warned! (That's another huge benefit of keeping a pair. They get less possessive of a human family member.) But again, this relationship would take time (months) to develop & isn't something you could accurately test out in the store. Unlike bigger birds, I just don't think GCCs are as easy to "feel out" just by a few store visits.

If it is too nippy for your tastes, get it a friend. In fact, I'd say get it a friend anyway. They are just incredibly social - mine don't even groom themselves - they take turns grooming each other! They are also just the very cutest birds to watch of any that I have, because of all that social interaction. And they're **very low maintenance** when kept in pairs. Fairly quiet too, and cheap to feed, cheap to buy toys for (because they're so small). I have a trio, actually - all girls. And yet, mine have stayed totally hand tame, step up etc with no problem at all. It's not true IME that you will lose their "pet potential" if you keep them in *same sex* pairs or groups. (Now, if there was true mated pair bonding going on, I don't know what would happen.)

Okay I know this is an old thread, but this brings up my age old question... I wonder if a male green cheek could ever be friends with another male...without the fighting.

My Green Cheek has had to spend more time in his cage since I got him because he stalks and ATTACKS all the other birds. Sure he's jealous, but sheesh!

He gets his one on one time, but I kind of wish he did have a friend.
Everytime I see them at a breeders, there are always 3-4 and they are all plastered together. I would love for him to be happy, and he's the one bird that I think has bonded fine with me so I don't think that would be in jeopardy.

I hate to take the chance though and end up with bird fight. I wish I knew what my odds were, wish I could introduce him to another male LOL.

Rayne is PUSHY. Rico will preen her, but won't let her preen him! He's a big ole chicken. I don't think there's another bird that really would stand a chance with her. It's just how she is. However, she's got Rico right next door (cages are right up against each other), and they do interact. I know that if birds are played with every day, they can be safely housed together. However, after the boys' mess, I'm just a chicken. I couldn't ever house one of mine with another. I know they do well in flocks, and they all seem to do well in the same room (with the exception of Angel, but he's keeping himself booted). If Rayne didn't pick so much, it would be nice. She seems to smile if she can make Rico fly away from her... KIDS!!
