RIP Tobasco

I bought a Green Cheek Conure at Petco on November 21st, he was 6 months old at the time. I saw him back in July at the pet store and instantly fell in love and saved up my money and convinced my dad to let me get one. After a week, he threw up a little here and there, but i didnt think much of it. His health seemed to pick up and he was playing more. Then last night he just kind of laid down and wasnt moving too much. It was sad to see, but I had seen him like that twice before. I stayed up late with him to see if he would get better and then he was moving and chirping a little bit so I went to put him in his cage and I put him by his water dish and he fell in to his water and wasnt struggling to get out, I dried him off and went to put him in his happy hut and I kept my hand under him just incase he fell and he did, so I hung out with him a little more, it got to the point where I was just so tired. I put him all the way in his happy hut so he couldnt fall out of it. This morning when I woke up I looked inside the happy hut and didnt see him. I looked around in the cage and saw him laying in the corner I went to pick him up, and he was stiff as a board and not moving. I may have only had him a month but I loved him so much and I just wish I could have done something.

I'm so very sorry for your loss. Please do contact the pet store, there should be a 30-day "guarantee" & they need to be advised that there may be problems with their animal husbandry or the breeder. Of course, I know it will not make up for your loss, but may give you a little nest egg for when you are ready to adopt again.

I totally agree with catschair's message. There should be a health guarantee. I've recently read that Petsmart has had an outbreak of psittacosis in their Minnesota stores so perhaps Petco is experiencing similar problems.

I'm very sorry for your loss. It sure doesn't take very long to grow attached to these feathered darlings, does it?

So sorry for your loss. Probably wouldn't have helped much but with this little fellow but if you decide to get another make sure you find an avian vet. Hopefully there is one close by you. I'm no expert but they say birds can hide illness so well that sometimes we don't know it til it's to late.

Oh I'm sooo sorry for your loss!

Even if your health guarantee has expired, I would still report this to Petco. They may have a potential health issue and need to altert the authorities.

Agree with the others though, will not make up for the loss, but maybe it will help your sense of satisfaction to know that you might be preventing another person from having to go through what you just did?

You should still check with Petco, sometimes they will still honor the guarantees a little past the 15 days. I am sorry for your loss
