Yazhi Update
Here is Yazhi as of today. He is about 3 months old now. I have to say though, it has felt like I have had him for so much longer than that.
My baby boy is such a spoiled, yet good, brat. Here is he playing on his gym I made him. ![]() You can see the bead/jute toys I have made him and his bath on top of his cage. On the right is his night cage. (Door is closed on accident... should normally be open. Let me go fix that...hehe) Now that I am back from fixing that door, here is a picture of him playing on his rope boing toy. He seems to love it. ![]() Ops, looks like I ended up with the flash in the mirror...lol Okay, now Yazhi look to the right for a close-up. ![]() Good. Now Yazhi, look to the left for another close-up shot. ![]() Okay, time for the King to rest from camera...lol I am so proud of my little boy. I could not have wanted a better companion bird, so when it comes to thinking of adding a birdie companion for his need of a flock when I am not home, I haven't been able to commit just yet. I feel I might be disappointed with the new comer or it will fall short of being a good enough compaion to Yazhi and me as well. Yazhi is just too perfect for me. It is another reason why I am thinking of trying to maybe find another baby to hand fed just as I did Yazhi so the new birdie would bound in a similar fashion. I just don't know. I also have dogs and a cat that a new companion has to be used to. But it seems poor Yazhi does need a friend... I try to be enough for him right now though. **continues rambling to herself** |

He looks great! Boy, it's hard to get a shot of them doing anything other than staring down the camera, isn't it? Love the play gym, you did good!

Nicely done - so he still uses the smaller cage - i guess it makes travel easy. He has turned out really well - such beautiful colours. I commiserate about the companion bird thing. Are you away a lot? Could he go to work with you at all? Are you thinking of another Cinnamon GC or a different GC type? [Maybe a Pearl or Black capped or regular GCC?] Or another small parrot? I have to admit after the terrible stories about different species not getting along, that have been posted here, I am hesitant about another bird that isn't the same size as my original. |

As far as DIY of Yazhi's gym, it's just a matter of making your own design to suit space, buying pvc pipes, buying pvc connectors, and it really helps to have a pvc cutter. Vet wrap is what I used so he can get a good grip. I didn't use glue at all. He mostly loves his tower part which I was purposefully trying to make the central area of the gym. He does love the stairs too, hopping around back and forth. The vet wrap on the vertical bars helps him climb too which he enjoys. I boing toy is just perfect for the tower. The gym is high enough off the ground to keep him out of the reach of a very lazy cat, but not taller than his cage top. (Birds like height, but he prefers his gym to climbing around on the top of his cage.)
He still uses his night cage to this day. I don't care to change that since it makes it easy to cover him at night and travel. It is his portable home away from home. Sometimes I only work 4 hours and other times I have an 8 hour day. Right now I am just parttime as well. My dog goes to work with me on most days since I teach dog obedience and my toy poodle happens to be my demonstration dog, but Yazhi can't come with me when I work now that he is done hand feeding. For companionship, I don't really want to get another conure unless it is in my thoughts, a perfect match. (I have not found one of those yet.) It would have to be one of the more quiet conures too. I much rather have a companion budgie though for him and preferably handfed and young. Of course a budgie would have his own cage and would never live with Yazhi. I would hope they can play out together though... Yazhi is a big enough bird for me. He has so much personality. Last edited by Mothi; 11-01-2006 at 08:32 PM. |

Of course I love Budgies - they are real characters as well.
Have you looked at the Linnie postings? They're a hoot too - very quiet, gentle & funny. They eat like a big parrot - hold food with their foot. Because they're a lot heavier than a Budgie they might be more of a match to a GCC. Agreed they should stay separate - have you read any of svolk's [Sarah] stories about her Budgie Jerry & Tiel Lulu? Budgies are considered HYPER when you compare them to other parrots & I find this amusing. I don't think of Laker as being hyper [maybe quick footed] - he sings for a few hours if there's music to sing to [even fall asleep singing - so sweet!] but more often then not he's busy preening or eating & is quiet. |
