Sun Conure Perch Size?

What size perch would you recommend for a sun conure?

For some reason, I feel like I've already read this information on this site somewhere before but I can't find it even after searching and browsing all the logical places I could think of. So I appologize if it's already been posted and in plain sight, but I'm afraid I've missed it

Browsing the internet, I found one source suggesting between 3/4 in and 1 in diameter. But I'm not sure how accurate it might be because it meant conures in general, not just sun conures (it might not matter too much, but if I remember right, a blue crown conure is at least a little bigger then a sun... but I might be going crazy again )

The other reason I'm not sure it's accurate is because I just found a source (one that I feel is reliable) suggesting caique perches about 1/2 in to 3/4 in. I have a caique as well as a sun conure, and they look almost the same size. But the sun conure fluffs her feathers a lot and when they shower together, she looks undisputably smaller than him as her feathers lay flat. (Actually it's funny because they sometimes look like they would weigh about the same and yet when you pick them up, the caique is heavier then he looks and the sun conure is lighter then she looks lol so there's quite a difference).

I'm trying to give someone an estimate on perch measurements so I'd like to be as accurate as possible. Any advice will be appreciated!

Thanks

I normally like to 'eye ball' it, and just get what looks right... although I did go to Home Depot recently and picked up a bunch of 3/4" ones I believe, and I wanted smaller ones too (1/2) but they were out...

A variety of perch sizes is idealy the best, such as natural branches, or even sanded manzanita. 1/2-3/4 would be fine.

Well, let me just say this: Quito, my GCC has perches that range from smaller than my little finger, all the way up to one of those "crazy wood" perches that's nearly the size of my wrist. She uses and seems to like all of them.

Just Make Sure You Have many different textures for the bird(s) to perch and stand on.
imagine holding on to a pencil for 2 hours, your hand would get sore, just like that, a bird's feet are VERY sensitive, so make sure you have 3 or more perches for them to chose. they need options. make sure to leave enough room in the cage for them to completely spread out their wings. sun conures like to play games, and hide sometimes, get a bird-friendly plant next to their cage for them to hide out by, it makes them feel safe and secure.

i hope that little information helped out a bit, good luck to you and hopefully your new best friend.

Perch size isn't a science - there's no need to be exactly right down to the tenth of an inch, mostly because your conure should have lots and lots of variety of perches anyway. Think of it this way: in nature, the trees they hang out in aren't made of dowel rods, the branches vary in diameter. Just provide different sizes and textures (texture is important) and make sure she can wrap her feet part-way around them to get a grip. After a while it'll become a little more obvious which ones she prefers and you can go from there.

Regarding the perching size for a sun conure: the basic rule is to have at least 3 or 4 different widths and textures. Have a few very thin ones because they are good for developing muscles and birds tend to perch on things much smaller than people generally offer - the foot should be able to fully close over the branch. Also, offer a soft one up high for roosting. I like the bendable rope ones and many of my birds roost on those, they are good for resting feet. Also, "pedi perches" with variation in the widths across one perch are good. I also give each bird a "boing" a bendable rope because of the movement. Trees and tree branches in the wild are always moving and are not stationary when birds land or climb on them, so the boing gives them some natural movement. And, I give them swings, too.

Have fun and be creative! I will try to post some pictures of my guys at some point.
