Molting

I think Doyle is going through his first molt. Tonight when I came home after work I found a green feather in the bottom of his cage and he has been a little nippy lately and extra cuddly at the same time (I hope that made sense, lol). Also I noticed that his appetite is really increasing and he is eating more food and wanting food immediatley when I get home. He eats fresh fruits and veggies in the morning and at night (and for lunch when we are home) and seed is in his cage when we are gone.

When did your bird(s) go through their first molt? Did their attitudes change a little?

I may be a bit bias but I think Nandays are gorgeous! They are very loud when they want to be, lol. Our neighbor next door says he squaks when the dogs bark and he can here him. But he doesn't mind because he has birds himself. I would love to get another Nanday, but I think I am pushing my luck with Evan letting me have a TAG, lol. Tiffany

Yep I think we are definitley going through the first molt. 3 more feathers this morning. Is there anything I can do to make this less stressful for him?

bathe him a little more often to soften up the new pin feathers coming in, and help him preen his little head.
he's still quite young, often you can find information that it's too young for a first molt, but valo went through one at about the same age... it might not be a full molt, but you might find some feathers right in time for christmas cards
love doyle - he's sooo cute!

I've always heard extra showers plus some aloe vera for itchiness and extra protein. If they like scricthes they'll sometimes want more - but at the same time if you rub a pin feather the wrong way - he'll certainly let you know about it! Some of our fids prefer extra attention when they're molting - and a few that want more alone time. HTH!

Casey, my tiel, and Charlie, the mitred, both enjoy scritches and don't normally mind me preening the new pin feathers... of course yeah rub em the wrong way they are not gonna be happy! But they still accept more scritches anyway!

shadow has been going through a major molt.. its been going on about 2 months now and hes still loosing and growing new feathers. baths really seem to relax him and stop the itching. hes been a little bit more moody than normal during this time.. but still his sweet self. he craves attention more than ever during his molt. he loves when my boyfriend or myself pinch the end of his new feather coming in but as everyone else said.. he lets us know if we do something he doesnt like! we do this after hes had a bath as its very easy to see them when hes wet and they are softer than. its also important your fid have a good diet during a molt; lots of healthy food. we have been feeding shadow a lot of eggs--he LOVES em!
