New Sun Conure owner

Just a few questions:

1-- I just got my sun Conure this weekend and the breeder that i bought Rikki from said that his tail feathers where eatin or plugged off by another Conure in the same cage, how long till they grow back he is about 6 months old now.

2-- Rikki seems to flutter is wings alot is this normal?

3-- What is the best way to get Rikki to come out of his cage?

Thanks for any advice.

Congrats on yourt new bird. I have a sun conure.
She wing flutters alot. With her it means look at me and pick me up I am excited. With yours it just may be nervousness. The bird needs time to adjust to you and your house When I bring home a bird I give it time to settle and learn the cage. Usally a day or two before I open the door and coax the bird out.

Is the bird hand tamed and just frightened? or is this an unsocalized bird?
If frightened I would let it adjust. Sit by the cage , talk softly, offer treats from your finger tips. Gain your birds trust. Also get a good parrot book like Guide To The Well Behaved Parrot. Nothing ever beats a book for learning about your bird and how to handle it.

With the tail feathers if they are completely plucked out and not broken off then you should start seeing pin feathers coming in soon. They will look like long whitish pink shafts.

Good luck,
Lynda

I'm new to this board, but I do own a Sun Conure along with 3 other birds as well. I got my Sun Conure(Kiwi)about 8 mths. ago from a friend. I believe he's about 2 yrs. old now. He was not a nice bird when I got him, he use to bite so hard he would draw blood from me. It took alot of patience on my part, but now he's a real sweetie. He use to be shy at coming to me, but now he demands to be held on a daily basis. Conures can be loud, I'm sure you must know that by now. My Kiwi will flap his wings really fast when he wants your attention, or does not want to go to sleep at nights. In the mornings he will scream for attention, so I have to let him out for aliitle taste of oatmeal and then he settles down and he's ready to go back to his cage. They love water, you gotta see that for yourself it's really a joy to watch them shower themselves. Mine goes in the bathroom sink with alittle warm water, and he just goes to town with it. Your Conure will come to you soon or later, just be patience and calm and he will come around. Buy a book on conures, I did and I have learned alot. My Kiwi was one mean little guy at once, now we are buddies to bthe end. Remember this saying..! The best thing about your parrot biting you is that you get to bite him back(in a nice way that is)......! Enjoy your wonderful bird, you will find a wonderful friend who will love you for life. Tke care god bless.! :

This goes out to Rikki the scared little Conure. First time owners of conures may not beaware that they can be some very loud birds. The orange Sun Conure are very bad for that, they like to be heard in a loud way. This is my first time owning a conure, and my husband can't stand the noise he makes. He won't talks just squaks, but it's his way of talking to us. Well I'd love to own another, but hubby is not going to allow that. O" well maybe one day I'll sneak one in the house.! Kiwi is very social with my other birds, he and my little parrakeet seem to be bonding a strange loving relationship towards each other, and my female cockatiel loves him to. Rikki will come out of his cage when he's ready, mine does once in a while I never close his cage door. Remember birds like to perch up high in there cages, my conure freaks out if I move his perches around.!

I hope you little guy has settled down a little now , was he hand raised ??? never force a bird to do anything always be patient and kind they will come around when they learn you are not going to harm them..
YES LOUD ..Sunny is our watch bird...Screams in the morning to greet us ..screams if we leave the room and he wants us ...and if he see`s a bird (outside the window ) he screams a warning to us his flock ...Noisy but we love him, he is a clown too and flys from swing to playstand to his cage and hangs from the blind cords showing off ...I am sure your little guy will be just wonderful company for you he is only young at 6 months so he will learn to trust you....
Chat later ...marion aka Majj
