Introducing another conure?
Introducing another conure?
We have recently started thinking about getting a second conure. We got our Nanday (our first parrot) a couple of months ago and he’s doing great. We are now considering getting a Green Cheek Conure. From your experience, what behaviour changes can I expect to see in my Nanday? I assume over time they will learn to be friends as conures are flocking birds. One of my concerns is that the Nanday may become loud with a second bird in the house (the cages will be in the same room). Currently my Nanday hardly makes a sound. What changes do you think I will see in my Nanday? What changes have you seen when introducing new birds into your home? Any advice or feedback would be appreciated! Thanks, Colen |

I have a gcc. He was my first bird for 2 yrs. He was (and is) very bonded to me. Then I bought a baby male caique. The next day Rocky was curious about the caique. But from then on he HATED him. He would try to nip him or bite him whenever he could. At first the baby caique would just squeal and avoid Rocky. Rocky obviously put him in his place as far as pecking order. After a couple yrs., fights started (nobody hurt, just squabbles). Now they will groom each other, but it is a very tolerant relationship. Rocky will still nip at the caique. The caique sometimes wants to wrestle with the conure, who doesnt understand and is now more afraid of the caique then before. The caique's mood can change quickly and I NEVER let them be together unsupervised. It now appears that the caique is top dog. I try to just spend time with the conure, as the caique monopolizes so much of my time.
I think two conures may get along better than a caique and a conure, but be warned there may very well be more time involoved with two birds! I did babysit a sun for awhile. Both of my birds would literally fly at it to attack it whenever I was cuddling it. They hated it. |

Big yes on the noise level going way up.Make sure to quarantine the new bird.Shower your nanday with attention to prevent jealousy. When it comes time to introduce them,do so on neutral territory. My two have known each other 5 months and while Cheddy[sun] would love to be friends,Pollo[blue crown] isn't having it!

thank you all for posting!
Wow... Maybe I don't know what I am getting myself into lol. The noise thing is not a big deal to me, although my girlfriend may think otherwise. I would hate to get another only to stress out my current Nanday. Half the reason I am considering another is I figured he'd apprecaite the new friend. Although this may never be the case. Unfortunatley I have no way of really finding out how he'll react to a new flock member without going out and getting another. I know each bird is going to be different, but please continue to share your stories, good or bad, this will definately help me out on my decision making! Thanks everyone! |

well you never really know how a bird is going to react to a new member. But if you do get a new FID....you gotta shower your nanday with TONS of love as to avoid him'her getting jealous.
i introduced my Black cap Conure to my GCC and they LOVED each other since then...they are in separate cages...they every now and then, have there squabbles. ..but they love and do everything together.:![]() ~Nate
