Mark's Ark: A conure party!

The birds: 2 tiels, 2 suns, 2 nandays

Pictures:

Scotty (left), JC (right)

Big Mama (up top), Chicken Little (down low)

Dexter (left), Whizzy (right)

(yeah, I know.. repost of these pictures.. the new ones are still on the camera. I'll add those later)

So tonight we had a little party. My ex-s/o came over and brought her friend with her 3 kids. So 5 kids and 6 birds!!

Kate loved showing off to her friends! Scotty soooo owns her. He nailed my ex on Sunday, and she's still bleeding You should never stick your finger directly at a bird's beak. Espescially when he is defending his human girl!

JC has decided to move in with Scotty. I really can't get her out of his cage. So she's spending the night. She did not like all the excitement so I let her stay in his cage the whole time. She doesn't need anymore stress right now.

I let Scotty fly to his cage to show off for the kids. They thought that was really cool. He's clipped just a little bit but can still fly across the room.

After the Suns were out of the spotlight, the Tiels made an appearance! They're much more kid-friendly than the conures. Whizzy impressed everyone with his whistling ability. Dexter became the "hot potato" in the "I wanna hold a bird!" game. He really was a sport. Whizzy is a bit too flighty. Both of them have clipped wings right now, so they don't get further than the carpet.

Then Jake wanted a Nanday picture. So I got Big Mama out of her cage. I had to towel her to get her out, but she's a very well mannered bird away from the cage. Once out of her cage she will step up for me and actually stay on my hand (unlike some certain sun conures I know *ahem* that only think they should stay on your shoulder!) I didn't let anyone else handle her, as I don't trust her too much yet.

After the party settled down, I put a towel across the top of Scotty's cage. He LOVES hiding under a towel. It doesn't cover the whole cage, but just enough for him to play under it. So he put on a good show for the kids. My friend's 2 year old thought it was hilarious!

It was a pretty good party. Kate loved showing off her bird skills. Most importantly no one got bit and no bird got abused. I spent a lot of time explaining what was acceptable and not acceptable. You don't poke a conure.. they bite back! The tiels were very well mannered.

I'll post some pictures as soon as I find the digicam cable.

Well, well. Looks like you have a nice sized cage for the Nandays, since Scotty and JC have moved in together. (That was fast!)
I am so happy that you get a pleasure of Whizzys whistleling. He is a good bird.
I can't wait to see the pics you took with your camera. LOTsssssss of them! please!
Thanks for the update.

Scotty "hanging" out

Nandays and Cookie Boy

Nutriberries are yummy!! JC is right-footed, Scotty is left-footed.

Nandays like seeds.

And then the camera batteries died :(

I'll post more shots of the newly remodeled cockatiel cage. They moved into the old Nanday's cage. I cut up a maple sapling and made some nice natural perches for them. No more dowels.

Yes, that's an easy way to tell them apart, by which foot they hold food with. the other ways to tell are Scotty is banded, clipped, and more red than JC. JC will also fly around the room sometimes.

When I went to cover them up tonight, they were snuggling on the top perch. They've taken to each other very well. And they act almost the same!!

I've had a bit of cage-jumping lately. JC was in with the Nandays earlier. Yesterday when I went to put Big Mama back she jumped in the Suns' cage. They're not very hostile to each other, but not really friendly either.

I'm planning to build a playground for all of them soon. That way they get more time away from the cage.

Scotty up close, JC hanging out in the back.

They've been bonding lately. The other day I was giving some seeds, and they both came out and JC nipped at Scotty and chipped a little piece off of his beak! Other than that, they've taken to eachother (and Kate) very well. They've been less friendly with me as of lately.. but mostly cuz Kate is around and they think they need to defend her from me!

Dexter on the left, Whizzy on the right, whistling up a storm! This was the old nanday cage, which had 1 dowel perch. (yes, it was way too small for them) Now it has all maple custom perches. The old cockatiel cage was a little bit smaller. Now they can both eat at the same time.

The Nandays in their new home. They're still adjusting to the good life ( and zupreem pellets). They're not as acrobatic or playful as the Suns are, but they life they've had hasn't been as good either. Hopefully Chicken Little's feathers grow back soon. I still can't handle him without getting bit because he's scared. I trust Big Mama enough that when I say step up, she just bites to test my sturdiness as a perch. She's never drawn any blood.

Hi Markus,

I love seeing pics of all of them and hearing their stories. Looks like they are adjusting well. I can see Whizzy whistling in the picture! So cute! I always enjoyed that. He loves his preening toy. I noticed too, that JC is a childrens bird. She would love to fly to my daughter and sit on her shoulder (even on my son who would freak out). I thought that was rather unusual considering I only had JC for one week but maybe the suns are more outgoing.
I am happy that Kate is enjoying them. My daughter is the same way. She will go over to my greys and give them treats and kisses them on their beaks through the bars. Pepper likes to fly on her head. I am trying to teach both that it is best to fly on the hand. She still gets pretty upset when Pepper beaks her because she thinks Pepper is biting her.
