My conures cage history!

When we got Chucky (our Green Cheek Conure) we didn't seem to think just how much room our fids would "enjoy" to have. So our first fid Chucky went thru several cage histories. I thought that I'd share those histories with you.... On Monday we got his final cage (the last pic) and got him all setup. We think now he's going to be happier...

Here is his cage history:
  1. First he was in a cage we got from PetCo (where we purchased him) and we were living in an appartment. 20x20x28 with 3/4in bar spacing
  2. Then we ordered the second cage with the playtop off of eBay just a few months later. 18x18x36 + playpen height with 1/2in bar spacing
  3. Then about a year later we bought a home and got Autum and got the HUGE double cage you see Chucky in here. I've included a close of the little guy in this huge cage. His 1/2 of the cage is 36x36x72 with 1in bar spacing. On this picture below you will most likely have to click on the thumbnail and look closely to see this tiny bird in this huge cage (hint: he's in front of his yellow "happy hut")
  4. Then about 5 months later we rescued Skoobie Doo; who we had to put into Chucky's 1/2 of the huge cage as Skoobie Doo came to us in a tiny 20x20x28 cage - way, way, way, to small for a African Grey (picture of it with him in it when we brought him home included below).
  5. So Chucky had to go back to his white cage with the playpen .Then we made plans to get Chucky a larger cage. 18x18x36 + playpen height
  6. Finally in the last picture: Now almost a year later we finally got him a larger cage 20x40x36 with 3/8 bar! I think he will be much happier here in the luxury room cage. The only thing I don't like is that the bars are too close together. We can no longer scritch him thru the bars before we head off to work in the mornings.
I thought that I'd post these to give some people some ideas of what "their fid" might look like in various size cages and various bar spacings. This might help some of you in getting a "proper" sized cage for your fid - as all to often people get one without realizing just how "small" it really is and thier fid suffers for it.

we just couldn't leave Skoobie Doo in this "prison" for another second!

thanks for looking... Oh, some lucky fellow out there just bought that 18x18x36 cage with playpen from us for only $50.00 - we're not out to profit... we just have too many non-occupied cages stored around the house now - the buyer has a marroon belley that is in a smaller cage and he wants to update it. Now to the attached photos of Chucky's cage history:

I have the same cage that Chucky just got for Link, my Parrotlet. I've been very happy with the cage so far, and for Link... it was instant love :) It's hard to find a large cage for a small bird that has more width than height.

I think many of us can relate to your cage history story.
We buy a new cage thinking it will be the last one, but later realize it is still too small or we acquire another fid and a bigger cage is a must.

Funny though that I just read your story because a few hours ago I tried to remember all the cages I had for my fids and the total was 8, including a tiny travel cage.

Thanks for the pictures. I am sure they will help those who are looking for cage suggestions.

Re: Cages

Did you ever have a problem with the 3/4" bar spacing with your Green Cheek? I have a cage like your white (playtop) and also a larger one that looks just like it only the bars are 1" bar to bar... 3/4" between. What measurements do people actually use: bar to bar or between? I am getting a Crimson-bellied Conure and when the bird gets larger I would love to be able to use my large cage for it but have been warned against the 3/4" between the bars. What do you think?
