Can Pyrrhuras and Aratingas Get Along???
I could use some input. About two months ago one of my green cheek conures (George) died. I brought my two conures home from the parrot store about 3 years ago. They were together when I got them as part of the same clutch. Now I want to get another conure, but not necessarily a green cheek. My surviving conure (Ringo) is very attached to me and was so even when she shared her cage with George. The other one just tolerated me, but was very attached to Ringo. Anyhow, long story short, I don't have a lot of space and I'm hoping that whatever conure I choose will eventually be able to go into the same cage with Ringo. I'm considering a brown throat conure because the price is right, but also because their size was comparable to Ringo, who was actually bigger than George, and I liked what I saw in terms of personality. Does anyone have any experience with these two types of conures together or, if not, any helpful advise? One breeder told me that conures, no matter which species, should get along as long as they are similarly sized. Then the store owner that I got my fids from told me that pyrrhuras and aratingas won't get along. This is a big decision and I don't want to make the wrong one.

in the end you'll NEVER have a guarantee that 2 birds, independent of species, will get along... you might be able to place them in the same cage together, but if this is your only option i'd re-consider getting a second bird. generally you want them to get used to each other while being seperated to avoid potential injuries... if you can't house them seperately it's kind of a gamble.
if 2 birds "grow" up together, it's different compared to when they are introduced to each other when older JMO - best of luck and welcome to BB ![]()

I agree with Bee. I also feel that it's best for Ringo to have someone of his own kind, and even opposite gender. Even if they breed you dont have to hatch eggs and it's at least giving them some semblance of a normal life.
It would be nice if he could pick her out. My Parrotlets did that and they arent supposed to like other birds but it's bull. EVERY bird wants company and a family. They are an undomesticated species wired for constant companionship 24/7. And humans dont really fulfill their needs. They just settle. Just like they settle on mating with a piece of wood lol. Also I think two birds when the time finally comes that they BOTH CHOSE to live together ....really need the largest possible cage so one can escape the other. But it IS a crap shoot. You need careful planning and execution and TIME and SPACE. I had many birds of many sizes and species all living together in my pet store but in a huge playpen supervised. That's when they always get along ok, and flighted ...out in the open...so if something spooked someone or somebody got cranky, the others could fly off 6 inches to avoid a tiff. |

![]() I've got one male budgie and 4 female budgies.... the male still humps certain toys! ![]() Pyrrhuras tend to get along well with other pyrrhuras, regardless of species, from what I've noticed. Aratingas on the other hand tend to be a lot more choosy about their buddies, so may not get along well with eachother, even of the same or similar species. As for pyrrhuras and aratingas getting along together??? Nope! Can't do it! I mean, just look at this sun conure/green cheek hybrid! ![]() ![]() ![]() Other than that, well it's really a "hit or miss" type of thing... some birds get along the instance they meet, while others may take a few weeks or months.... and yet others never do get along.

There's a general rule of thumb that lovebirds don't get along well with other species... especially peachfaces... due to the fact that they can be SO aggressive to others... yet, I can google images of lovebirds with other species of birds!
P1020064 pictures from birds photos on webshots MIX BREEDING (BUDGIE & AFRICAN) pictures from birds photos on webshots My point is, there may be general rules of thumbs on each species however there will always be exceptions... for example, the green cheek conure (pyrrhura) and sun conure (aratinga) hybrid above.
