green cheeked conure

hey guys,

i was at petland yesterday and they had some green cheeked conures but they were 300 each, USD. so instead i am going to get one from a breeder. I am soooooo excited. i have top save up the money still tho...lol i already have his name picked out and everything. his name is going to be Gizmo...i just want a normal color, nothing fancy.

Do any of you know if GCC adapt well to those bird harnesses? i really want top get him one so i can take him out side with me.

Also, is cockatiel food good or should i mix cockatoo/macaw food with cockatiel food?

I'll post pics as soon as i get them but that might be a month or two and by then i'll have to start a new thread...lol

an update on my lost parakeet:

i got a call last night from somebody down the street from me saying that they found my bird. they said that they found him by their mailbox out by the road, which is a busy one. based on the shape of his body when they found him, i believe that he was hit by a car.

So sorry to hear about your parakeet.

Normal Green cheeks go for about $150 here in MO. from a breeder. Depending on your breeder - she/he may be willing to help your GCC adjust to a harness while they are weaning if you supply them one to use. If they don't - if you start getting your bird used to it as soon as he comes home - I would think you could have success with it. I used flight suits with my GCC and black capped. They hated the act of getting them on - but once they were they didn't seem to mind them too bad. Unfortunately I didn't keep up with using them so they aren't too thrilled with them now!

As far as diet for your bird - hopefully your breeder will wean them onto a diet of pellets and fresh foods. Mine eat a dry food mix from Bird Paradise - their Ultimate Blend - and they love it! PARADISE ULTIMATE BLEND - BIRD PARADISE BLENDS by Bird Paradise Then they also have access to Zupreem fruit pellets and get fresh/cooked food daily. They get a tiel seed mix about every other or 3rd day or some nutriberries and avicakes.

i know pellets are good for them but they aren't readily avialable in my area so i have all my birds on seed diets. but they all get fresh salad consisting of lettuce, carrots, green beans, peas, brocali, corn, strawberries, grapes, etc. 3 times a week.

thanks for the info about the harness. i'll see what i can do about it. i would really like to gewt him used to one so we csn go thethe bird store together and he can pick out a new toy...lol i can see it now...all the wierd looks cause everyone is used to seeing a dog on the sidewalk on a leash, not a little parrot..rofl

thanks....i want to get a yellow sided conure for 225 dollars from a breeder about an hour away from me. hopefully within the next week or so. I am sooo excited but i have to borrow about 125 dollars from my mom...lol

You might check with a rescue near you and see if they have any for adoption or foster care. My Fiona, is a maroon bellied GCC, who is 20 yrs old and her owners just dropped her off at the pound! She is a love, steps up, is imitating whistling and is very grateful for her new home-

We live in Virginia and paid close to $300 for our GCC. Not until after we fell for her did I realize they could be found for about half of that. I had a rescue and foster friend of mine tell me once that price isn't an object once you fall for a bird. I don't know about that because my funds are & were limited, but I wouldn't sell them for anything now!
