Contact calls

I've seen several references to people changing their birds' contact calls (e.g., getting them to whistle instead of screaming). Any advice on how to train a sun conure to use his "inside voice" to contact call?

im trying to imitate tiki's low growl/croak sound, i can sound just like it, so when i leave the room, and he screams, i answer with that low sound. sometimes he will answer back with that, but mostly he screams.

Yesterday my Senegal decided that she needed to immitate the Dusky's contact call. If one wasn't bad enough, now I have two!

Well, sure, to a degree... you could teach me to say nice things rather than yelling bloody murder though.

Stewie is getting a little better. He knows he's not supposed to scream for attention; I don't go over to him unless he's using his "inside voice", but sometimes he gets so excited that he just can't help himself, especially when I'm coming home from work.

It's really adorable. It's like he tripping over himself trying to use his inside voice while the scream is just fighting to get out.

SQWUUAAAK!!!... i mean squawk, squawk. See I'm using my inside voice squwaksqWUUUUAAAKK!!!!, oops, i mean squawk.

OMG That totally made me laugh! That is exactly what Darwin does! ha ha ha! Aren't they funny!

And I am all for training them to use their inside voices. I know it is what they do (sqwaking), but to me, it is like training a dog to poop outside. Pooping is in their nature too, you just have to train when and where it is appropriate to do so. Darwin is "allowed" (sounds sort of bad) loud sqwaking whenever I get home or when I am prepping his breakfast or dinner. He just gets too excited not to scream his loudest. But if I am working during the day at home and he screams, he gets ignored. If he uses his inside sqwak, grunts, or any talking, he gets lots of attention. :) They seem to pick it up fairly fast.
