Need advice, just took in a baby bird that has crop burn

Ok I just took in a baby that I got from a person that really didn't know what she was doing and burned this baby's crop. I have taken this baby in and I am getting this baby help from my vet, right now she has a scab on her crop and I now have to wait till the scab weeps then I need to take the baby in for surgery. I told the lady I will take responiblity for the bird from now on but I told her she needs to pay for the surgery that will cost $216 and she agreed and has already prepaid for the surgery. Now I have never had a bird with crop burn and I don't really now what to expect. My vet says it is not a real bad burn and she thinks it will take just one surgery to fix and the out come looks real good. This baby is 8 weeks old and so sweet, I am scared for her. I now have to feed her real small meals of formula as her crop will not be able to hold a full feeding at this time so most likely it is going to be real hard to wean this baby later on. Has any one delt with a baby with crop burn to give me advice on what to expect.

I don't know anything about it but was thinking that maybe cool formula would help soothe the pain. We all know that a burn is the worst kind of pain. Just my thoughts. I am pretty sad that it happened in the first place.

Yeah I agree that it is sad it happened in the first place. I have been giving her formula that is about 100 degrees. The lady was so upset about it and scared at the same time. She was a friend of my friend and when this happened she came to me for help.

100' is about right, any cooler than that, she might refuse.

absolutely- cool formula may not only be refused, but could cause crop slow down. Make the formula as close as possible to the correct temp as to not make it uncomfortable for the baby. If you want to offer something cool to soothe the crop, offer cool water BETWEEN feedings.

I was just going to say the same thing Flappucino said. Be careful with feeding too cold formula as it will cause slow emptying crop.

Good luck! The most important is that he is now well taken care of and under the vet's care.

I will be thinking about him. So sad that it happened though.

What kind of conure is he?
