My Little Pumpkinhead

I am the very happy owner of a Black Capped Conure. "Wawa" and I are getting along very well. Wawa means either son or daughter in Incan (black caps are from Peru - Incan territory). What a nutty little clown. I can't believe how incredibly friendly and trusting this little guy/gal is. Iv'e even had him out for walks and he soaks up all the cuddles he can from absolute strangers. I met two of his siblings and they bit hard compared to his little mouthing and nippiness. He also listens very well when he does get carried away and bites. Basically I say ouch and ask him to not bite me, and unless he's cranky, he stops right away. He even started having naps with my ill husband by the second day home. So far he has not chosen either of us over the other, however he spends most of his time with me, as he is my bird. Anyway, I could go on and on about how tender and sweet this bird is. As far as noise goes, occasionally he will "beak off" a real jungle bird sound. It's actually pretty, not screechy and not ear piercing. What a great investment if anyone wants an incredible companion.

The funniest thing is, even though I purchased a happy hut for Wawa, during his afternoon nap he prefers to stick his head into a little pumpking toy he has! At first I though my god the poor thing got his head stuck in his toy, but no after several repeated days of this and observing how fast he can remove the pumpkin himself, I realized this is just another one of those quircky conure things you hear about.

Congrats on a beautiful bird. Wawa is adorable.

Not to put a damper on your nice post, but I read that Wawa naps with your ill husband. First, so sorry to read your husband is ill.

I do want to mention, though, the danger of sleeping with a bird in physical proximity (out of the cage, perhaps on your chest or on the bed next to you) as there have been accidents where a sleeping person has inadvertently rolled over onto their pet bird and unknowingly suffocated their friend. Just a word of caution. Again, welcome to BB. It is a wonderful resource with truly wonderful members.

I guess I should have mentioned that he does not nap, just Wawa. Wawa likes to go into his shirt and curl up in his chest hairs, so poor Andre is pretty much stuck watching TV for a while or reading. He loves the little guy too much to disturb him. It's nice to watch the joy that this little guy has already brought into our home. Andre can't work now (not easy on men) and the two loves we have keep him busy and company when I am at work. We are very lucky to have an amazing dog as well...wow. We are blessed.

I once had a re-homed BC for a few years, and he was also "unusual" in his sleeping arrangements. The supplies I acquired with the bird included a plastic hamster tube; when I inquired what it was for, the lady that gave him to me replied that "he sleeps in it". When Cricket (the bird) was tired, he would climb into his cage and into the tube and go to sleep without any prompting from me... :-)

Thanks for the pictures because if I didn't see it for myself, I wouldn't have believed it. It looks like you already have his Halloween costume picked out. He can go as a pumpkin. That is just too cute.

I have a friend with a husband who also can not work and it has been very difficult for him and then her. I have been trying to convince her to get him a bird.

Good luck to you and your hubby.

wawa is gorgeous - i'm sorry to hear that your husband's ill, but i'm also glad that you're blessed with wonderful companions... i think the fact that you're both spending time with wawa is great (there's a tendency that conures pick favorites).

welcome to BB
