Scooter update
It's day 5 and I'm a little concerned.
He will always run to the corner of the cage when he sees me. He will often call out for me, especially after playtime. When playing, he will step-up but NOT want to be scratched, even though he has a significant molt going on and slowly scratches his face with his talon. When perched on my finger, I noted frequent dry sneezing. Nothing coming out of his cere, but the frequency of the little sneezes is worrisome. Very skittish around my fingers when not doing step-up. He will often, when seeing me approach, step BACKWARDS and away from me. This contradicts his calls and other behaviors that suggests he wants to be around me. On day 1, he was very afraid of coming out of the travel box -- I think some of his behaviors are natural shyness and fear. Last night he would tolerate my scratching for a brief moment and then shy away. Ditto for tonight. A couple of times I'd swear his eyes were partially drooping as if he was tired. Equally weird, I once saw him perching on one foot this morning... and twice (day 2 and day 4, both in early evening) he would perch on my finger and then raise one foot up as if he was going to sleep, and then start to grind his beak. This AM (day 5) he seemed very happy. This PM, his usual fraidy-bird self. As for toys, on days 1-3 he played with the leather strips toy. On days 4 and 6, he's warming up to the rawhide/bell toy -- I can hear the ringing often. His doo looks normal. And he does eat and drink normally. But these two factors may not mean much. I think most of his behaviors are due to his new environment, but considering Rusty was in the partition next to his and Rusty is human friendly and everything, (not to mention having an infection though I still think that was due to the accident)... I will call the vet tomorrow AM with the same info, but if you think it's one way or the other, please say so. (note - the vet did recommend I bring him in after 2 weeks; which I will do unless I suspect anything getting even remotely worse.) ![]() Scooter! (No photo could do him justice; his bronze cheeks and blue highlights are absolutely bright and bold) ![]() Rusty, before breaking his toenail and getting infected. ![]() |

Is Rusty still at the vet? Could it be that he notices one of the flock is missing? This, plus a molt and new surroundings, might be enough to make him anxious. Is he a baby? How is Rusty doing?
BTW, Scooter is absolutely gorgeous. Is he gcc, or some variation? That blue is incredible. |

And Scooter is still anxious. He's allowing me to touch, after a while. He still does the rushing to the cage when he sees me... but if I get too close with my hand will scoot backwards. I will give him time to adapt. -- He has been with me for almost a week (Saturday) and used to be Rusty's cagemate so, yeah, with all the factors no doubt he's still freaked. Still, Scooter is quite a different character than Rus... His color scheme sold me too; I don't recall seeing that much blue or bronze. I'm positive he's a variation, but not sure who the two parents were. He was sold as a GCC, but no variant name was stated. |
