How Loud Are Sun Conures?

If you're wondering just how loud a sun conure is, I uploaded this video of Stewie "vocalizing": http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=bYFMo5Ar1k0

He can get louder than this, but it's pretty representative of what his usual screaming sounds like. Obviously he doesn't scream 24/7, but if you're thinking of getting a bird and you have no idea what an aratinga conure sounds like, you might want to know what you're getting yourself into when you fall in love with a sun conure.

Nice! Some videos sound quieter than suns really can be, but yours captures it nicely. My sun was looking around for that "other" bird!

I like how you guys use "inside voice" to try and get him to be quiet, we use "use your words". Sometimes it works, and then there are days like you had too!

What a cute video! Stewie is so smart.

I personally didn't think it sounded that bad. To be honest it didn't sound a lot different from Kermit. I sometimes wonder if she's as loud as a sun but she just doesn't vocalize as much as a sun. She doesn't do it very often but it makes my ears ring when she does.

Thats funny. My fiance's parents have a Sun Conure, Ares, they also say "use your inside voice" to him, it usually works. Although, "shhhhshhhh" just makes him scream louder. I don't know if the Sun Conure is the 'loudest' bird I have ever heard, but their screams can be so shrill and high-pitched that they seem louder then they really are. People should hear this and more before deciding if a Sun Conure is right for them! Thank you for the post!

I love Ares the Sun Conure, but sometimes I am really grateful I have a quiet Senegal. :-)

Yeah, I certainly don't mean to imply that suns are the loudest, but it seems to be a question that comes up a lot.

My family used to have an Umbrella Cockatoo and he was much, much louder - no contest. But he also didn't scream that often. Stewie isn't a terrible screamer by sun conure standards, but he does get into these screaming fits and I frequently have no idea what set him off.

As for the "shhh" sound... I read somewhere -- not sure how reliable the information is however -- that shhhushing sounds too much like a snake hissing, so it tends to upset parrots because they're hyper-aware of predators. Take it with a grain of salt, but that's one explanation for why shhhh doesn't work.

My husband won't let me have a sun due to their "loud" reputation. However I do believe it is reason enough for many suns to be rehomed.

That snake hissing thing is funny really. But like you said take it for a grain of salt.Snakes dont hiss when they are hunting(it would scare away prey). The few that hiss do so only when in danger and they are trying to scare something away.
Ive owned snakes all my life so I actually know much more about them then birds...But Im learning, especially that I want a quieter bird(not me but my hubby wouldnt stand for that)I will stick with gcc or the like.
BTW that is an absolutely beautiful bird.

LOL...thats about right. It even got Pita going. What I loved was that I always say "Inside voice" but that doesn't work. I also say "SHOOSH" I eventually end up turning my back to him, or leaving the room. Goofballs aren't they.

LOL Stewie is a true Sunny !
