Talking New Conure Cinnamon GCC

Well yesterday i bought a Cinnamon green cheek conure as a companion for my GCC, at first my GCC was angry and kept trying to eat the new guy, but i quickly got him out of the habbit (I would lie down on the couch and let them both play on my chest, and if he got nippy i picked him up and put him on the opposite side of the couch) It didn't really work... But my mums phone rang (Whitch is a human child crying... Or laughing can't tell) and they both shat brix, and my first GCC is friendly towards the cinnamon now... However he is still a little nippy towards him, no where near as bad though. Gonna monitor em for about a month before i even consider putting em into the same cage though! :D

Well anyway, i named him/her Gir (Zim and Gir from a cartoon named Invader Zim) he's sorta tame, teaching him some tricks, so far i've taught him to step up onto my finger, it's a very socialised bird (He was in a cage with a quaker when i got him yesterday) if he isn't expecting to be touched he bites really hard, trying to get him out of that habbit, also trying to teach him to play dead... some birds do it better then others, He also won't leave my side unless i put him in his cage, grew very attatched very fast,

My first conure (Zim) is biting me a bit harder then usual.. But not to hard, anyway i'm working on building a perch with some of the trees in my front yard (I mean outside of cage, one of those big branches going across with 2 others branches holding it up attached to a plank of wood)... In the process of typing this my cinnamon went into my other conures cage and is eating his food! Zim is sitting up top watching him... Not to impressed! but he isn't climbing down to hurt Gir by the looks of it... And now he's climbed back into his own cage to eat his own food... Zomg there so cute Once i find my camera charger i'll take pictures

Oh yeah, there is something my first conure does... And my Cinnamon just did it as i was previewing my post... I put my tongue out, and they try and bite it (It's a big game with Zim, Gir's only did it once... I've tried lost of times since yesterday though) does anyone else do this? (Can be a bit of a shock when they actually catch it though! doesn't hurt to much but)

Congratulations on your new addition.

I highly recommend quarantine to protect your first bird.

I agree with the others... quarantine is very important when bringing in any new bird.
Also, human saliva has bacteria that can be deadly to birds. If you want to kiss your birdies, the top of the beak or head would be a much safer practice.

Thats so cool.I want to get another greencheek for my guy as a companion too.I dont know if theyd get along though.
Isnt it too late to quarentine if they have already been together and eating out of the same dish?

Nuh they live in differaint cages... I probably should have quarantined... Hmm i don't wanna kiss my birds, they just like to bite my tongue ;D

Well i'll hope for the best and prepare for the worst with the whole quarantine thing eh? (Meaning i'll wait 2 weeks to handle them at the same time... But it may be to late i think if he was gonna catch something, he'd have caught it by now, i don't know why i didn't think to quarantine... I do it with Fish)So far both look alright though... Only one has eaten the others food, Zim hasn't eaten Gir's food... Unless he snuck out of his cage when i was sleeping... Guess its a good thing i change the food daily then, thanks for the congratulations

Thanks for the tip about saliva and bacteria stuff, i'll stop playing that game... Will try to find something else they can bite... A stick maybe! :D - I probably shoulda learnt this stuff with my first bird lol.

I just mentioned the quarantine because both of my birds have gotten sick within 30 days.

With Kermit she got sick around the 30 day mark and she had megabacteria. She is my first bird that goes to the vet so I didn't do a 1 week well bird. If I had had other birds they could have been infected.

With Cinnamon we have no idea what she had. I did everything "right", the 1 week check-up, quarantine, etc. All of her tests were negative and she came from a reputable store so the vet clinic said it was okay to introduce them at 3 weeks. I let them be in the same room, with one introduction on a footstool but not sharing playstands or anything. The same day Cinnamon had a seizure, 1 day later runny nares, 2 days later fluffed with tucked tail. We introduced them on a Sat. & on Tues. she was hospitalized for 5 days followed up with 7 days of home injections. The vet thinks maybe a crop infection. She is still limited on her food & water. If Kermit gets sick it would be my fault for not waiting 30, 60, or 90 days.

I just wanted to share my experience. Most likely you will be okay. My husband says we are just unlucky in birds. What are the odds of both of them getting sick the first 30 days?

Good luck.

Kristy

Congrats!!! I think they're just sorting each other out. Once that is done they should get along. If you have never seen green cheeks play, they play pretty rough. It's only not playing when one screams, then it's fighting lol.

Oh and about both birds sick at the same time..mine are lol. One has metal poisoning, the other has a bacterial infection...great...medicine time is fun NOT!
