Travel Cage size question.

Hello, my mother and siblings are getting ready to go on vacation and they wanted me to go as well. But, I own a sun conure, and don't trust my dad to give him all the attention he needs even though he says he will. I told my mother that I would like to go, and would go if we were able to find a hotel that allowed pets, because my sister used to have a parakeet we have a smaller cage about 16 x 12 x 12. I figured that this would be suitable for me to place his happy hut in for him to sleep in at night, as well as provide food and water. I also would bring his little play stand with us as to let him get out and play when we're in the room. I was just wondering if the smaller cage would be alright for him to sit and play in if I were to remove the happy hut and hang a couple of toys in until we get back to the room.

That is the size of our travel carrier for our sun and he does fine in it. don't like to leave him in there more than 3-4 hours, because he cant stretch his wings very easily, but most of the time we take him, we are around and he can be let out to play. Take perches that you can attach to the outside of the cage too (and a blanket for the top). And the playstand is a great idea too.
Here was is our setup (this was over Christmas for a month!):

For his travel cage, I just got Stewie one of those small cages they sell at pet stores (for budgies/cockatiels) - since the bar spacing is fine for a small conure. While I think they're too small for cockatiels to live in as a permanent home, they are convenient for travel. And they're pretty cheap.

the important thing is tail room. a bird needs room to turn around comfortably. they hate to sit there for hours with a bent tail. and he will be moving around, trust me. the size you mentioned sounds ok. i had to get a huge dog carrier for my macaw, shes 3 feet long.

Thanks, thats a pretty big relief, I didn't want my mother to go on vacation in another state alone, but I also didn't want my sun to be neglected until we got back.
I forgot to mention that he wont really be in his cage for much of the trip since we're driving, I take him in the car all the time and he's usually content to look out the window. We'll be a while in the car though as we're driving to Tennessee from Ohio.
