Young Green Cheek Question

Hi all. I recently got a GCC to keep my Jenday company as you may have read last month. BTW they are very happy together. They share a cage most of the time when I'm gone as they love to play so much. Thanks you all with your help!!

Well I recently noticed a ad in a the newspaper for 15% off conures at Petco where i got my GCC. I went back in as it had only been 10 or so days at that point and they gave me some money back Well I also asked to get all the paperwork they had on my little guy. I then found out that this little one isn't 6 months old but a tad over 3 and just finished hand feeding 2 weeks before i bought him. They also had a DNA test on him so I know that he is a him. Now I am happy that he is only 3 months. The concern I have is there anything special I need to do? Could you guys give me pointers or tips for young birds. If there are good sites or books please point me to them.

Thanks
Eric LT

You got your bird at the perfect time. If it hadn't been weaned, then there would be special work you would need to do.

If it is doing well, then you are already doing all you can for it. The advice I have recieved about my new (same age) gcc includes putting a blanket or towel on the bottom of the cage for the bird to snuggle with, place perches low until it learns how to balance, handle it lots, dont let it be outta the cage all the time so it doesnt get spoiled, and get it vet checked. Also its good to let the bird learn how to fly before keeping its wings clipped, as this teaches the bird balance and confidence.

Congrats on the new conure.

congrats on the birdie!!!

i agree on not clipping and putting some lower perches in! when i had first had my sun conure. she was clipped right off the bat. she never learned to fly very well unitl she was 3 then she finally got the hang of it. don;t let him out all the time..like said above..but it sounds like you are doing everything that needs to be done!!! hope all goes well!!! lets have some pics!!!

He seems well. His wings were already clipped :( My Jenday is a full flight bird and loves it!! I will not clip my GC's wings unless it's for flight training purposes as I think birds should fly. He's out more then he should be but less than my Jenday so I think he'll be ok if not a little spoiled as I think they all should be. My little Pip as I have named him is clumsy. Now don't get me wrong he's also a little acrobat but I've witnessed some horrific looking falls. He always seems ok but have anyone else seen clumsy little parrots?

most babies are clumsy and thats just part of growing up. Dont let Pip get onto high places where a fall could hurt him. Its best to keep him in low places right now. Definately let the bird be flighted, because that will teach him balance and he wont fall anymore. Its important for the bird's clumsiness.

Its perfectly normal, though. Just watch him carefully.
