Happy Hut Horror

First off Wawa is alive and ok... a little quite but ok.
We went shopping today and when we got home I started to put the groceries away. Wawa didn't give us the usual greating scream, so a little worried I looked in, and he was sitting in his Happy Hut looking out at me. I put away the groceries and still no sound from Wawa, so I washed my hands before going to see him. He always yells when there is water running and still no sound, so now a sick feeling hit me hard. I rushed into the bedroom where his big cage is, and he was clinging to the back of the cage on the other side of the Not So Happy Hut. Then I saw it! There was a string from the inside of the hut that he probably pecked loose wrapped around his neck!
God I am still sick over it. He stayed absolutely still, and I think that is the only thing that saved his life... he didn't panic. He waited patiently while I got it off him. Needless to say, the hut is out and gone!
I check that stupid thing every day, just in case there are loose strings. This is how fast it can happen so please BEWARE!
We are blessed it turned out OK but like I said that is how fast it can happen!
Still shaking,
Holly
p.s. right now he is with his dady getting extra loves celebrating he is OK

You are the second person I have read having a bad scare with the happy hut. Sounds like they are not a safe for our birdies.

Wow! What a close call! I was at Petsmart today and I noticed the little sun conure they have was missing his happy hut. I used to see him crawl into it to nap (they dont turn the lights off in the store at night!). When I asked where it was, I was told a new company policy...no happy huts. Maybe this is why.

Happy hut issues

I did see a happy hut that is designed for Suns and other conures that love to chew at sunconure.com. I do not have one, but they designed it specifically for chewing bird in mind so the threads do not injure the bird.

So I cannot tell if it is a good one, but here's the link...

Parrot Toys from www.SunConure.com

Dunno if that will work though....

This is probably the 5th or 6th stoy I have heard with happy huts, a couple didn't turn out as good as yours. I wonder why they still make them or if anyone has even taken the time to contact the compay about them? I'm glad everything turned out ok for you!

Ok, looks like I will not buy one after all. Now to figure out a different solution to give my baby a warm place to curl up. Inside my shirt will not work while I am in bed... lol

Oh and I am glad everything turned out alright for Wawa. I've only had my little one for a few days now, but I cannot imagine life without her now...
