It's very hard to tell if their male or female based on their personality. I own two GCCs (one male one female) and although there is differences you wouldn't be able to say for sure.
But I'll try to describe their personalities though, maybe it helps who knows. My male GCC (woody) is aggressive somtimes and throws anger fits when he doesn't get his way. His also adventerous and isn't afraid to explore the nearby area even if he has to walk on the floor/sofa/curtain. He is protective also, if i'm with him and someone he doesn't like is near me he attempts to protect me. My female GCC (amy) is surprisingly quiet, sweet, very relaxed and obidient. She is really caring towards woody. She is sweet with any person, unlike woody who dislikes anybody who is new.

We have a watch bird
They always talk about sun conures being noisy. Ours is pretty quiet but when someone pulls in the driveway Peaches lets us know someone is here. Or if someone walks up and knocks on the door. Actually before they knock on the door. I alway know when my hubby comes home from work at 8 am cause peaches lets me know. Im usually in bed at the back part of the house. Does your conure do that also

I have a male sun conure and he gets very loud, especially when hubby pulls up. He only likes me to spend time with him and gets nippy if anyone else wants to play. Not sure if this helps but thats how my Sweet P acts.

I couldn't tell until I got a 2nd sun conure. Put them together.. and then I can tell male/female right away. Scotty was splashing in the water dish and doing the male display when they first got together. JC was wooed heavily. She's my little sweetheart. My 6 year old daughter is OWNED by Scotty. I get bit if I try to touch him when he's on her shoulder.

Hmm...
Kiva is a male Sun, who is absolutely silent. His voice is quieter than my GCC's. No screaming, no biting. Always a mellow guy. He has a big blunty head and raises the feathers a bit in the back when excited. Bonn is a male, and a fire cracker. He says about 20 words and in context, and very clearly, he can be loud, and will nip on occassion. But, he's excessively loving too. He also has the big blunty head and raises his 'hackles' lol. Sunae is a female and a ...well, we call her a spoiled diva. She's a bit....yah. Her head is more rounded, smaller and she never raises any feather hackles, but she'll puff like a piece of orange and yellow popcorn when she's displeased - which is often lol. However, as long as she gets her way, she can be nice. She's also very loud and will take your hand off with her beak if she can. Xaf isn't a sun, he's a Jenday... but they're honestly close enough in temperment and personalities. He has the big blunty head and raises the feathers at the back of his skull too, is ...l....l...ooouuuuuuuuuuud. Loud. Oh my, loud. Except when he's feeling generous, then he just squeaks like a mouse. Crazy bird. Very loving, but has a tendency to nip hard. So, really? They're too similar to each other! Can't really tell gender by personality. What I've found is I can tell with head size and shape pretty consistently. Males have the big blunty heads, females are more rounded and smaller on average, even as young as 4 months, from what I've found.

Although behavior may suggest a sex, there are no guarantees. My friend had a crimson-bellied gcc. She was told by the breeder that it was a dna sexed male. It displayed definite attention-getting behavior. It strutted and swayed and was very extroverted. It's behavior was for all the world like that of a male. Until it laid an egg.
I know someone else who breeds gcc's. She posted videos of her little female, loudly interacting with her daughters, strutting around and showing off while the male sat quietly in the background. I used to think my gcc was a male based on his behavior - he stutts around - chest puffed out, tail fanned out, head reared back. He attacks his toys furiously. But now I think all bets are off! |

Not always, but sometimes you can tell by the space of the pelvic bones. The males are almost touching. The females have some space to lay eggs. Wawa had space so everyone thought he was a she. DNA says male. All in all, I'd rather have a male with space than a female with none.... I would worry too much. Wawa's head has that blunt sharp look to it as well, not rounded, and boy is he assertive when he does not get his way. He can draw blood one second and turn around and cuddle the next. He is just a very outspoken young man and once he has said his peace he is done. LOL At least his body language is easy to read and we know exactly what he is thinking. We are happy with that, and very proud of our little smarty.
