I also agree that a green cheek is a fantastic first parrot. They are full of personalty, come in a variety of colors, and are small and fairly quiet. I have noticed that the level of quietness depends on the home environment's level of noise. Birds tend to vocalize when other birds, people, or the tv are getting loud. Its just a habit birds have. You'll need to get a cage that is of good size. Green cheeks can do a cage with 18x18x18 but this is alittle small. larger then this is preferable. Bar spacing should be not more then 3/4in. For a sun or Jenday conure, alittle larger cage but probably same bar spacing is needed.
One of the first things you'll want to teach your parrot is the time out. This helps in developing a well behaved parrot. Just buy a cheap parakeet cage, something small you can use that the bird wont sleep in. Place the bird in here whenever its screaming or biting or generally not being a good bird. Only put the bird in the time out for a few minutes, 10 max. Do this instead of yelling at the bird, to develope healthy habits. Enjoy your new bird, but don't just rush into the decision.
