My son wants a Sun :)

I keep repeating my mantra..."be strong...no more birds...be strong...no more birds". The small bird store near my house has two stunningly gorgeous baby Suns...one of them in particular absolutely adores my 11 year old son. He steps up eagery, rides around with him, gives him kisses, preens the hair on his arms, and generally complains if he tries to put him down. The only experience I've ever had with Suns has been with nasty nippy screechy birds that were never handled - I've never owned a Conure myself. One of the few birds I've never owned, actually.

My son doesn't understand why I won't let him have the bird (he is *great* with our other birds and desperately wants one that will be "his" special friend). I've tried to explain the screeching.

Help me be strong.

If raised right... the screeching really is not so bad. But it is NOT easy!

Suns aren't a quiet bird in general, but I reckon they get a bit too much focus put on their noise. In my own experience it's only for a few minutes at certain times of the day or for certain reasons... like being happy when I come in from being out.
Lily has never been loud to the point I have to leave the room and since getting Mimi just over a week ago she's even quieter... infact, not a single scream today. Just a little chitter chatter between the two.

I totally agree with Xen, a sun that feels part of the flock will not incessantly scream all day long. Don't get me wrong, they can blast your eardrum right out if they want (and sometimes do when they are being bratty), but it is not a constant thing. Plus, suns aren't known for being nippy birds (GCCs however are...).

I would say that if you can't handle the screaming, then it might not be the best bird for your sun. It depends on you too though...for example, I think lovies are so adorable but their scream sounds like an icepick through my brain. Even if their screams were infrequent, I would just go crazy. But my suns pitch doesn't bother me one bit, so his screams are easy to ignore.

Would this bird be with your other birds or in your sons room?

I'm the wrong guy to talk to. I desperately wanted a pet of my own, bird or dog (had fish ...they didn't cut it) but never won. With supervision I still think it would have been good for me. The only thing I'll throw out there is that I hope it likes you too because in seven years when he goes away to school or moves out the bird may have to stay with you.

I love those Sun Conures. I think they are stunning.

Let us know when he picks him up and what he names him!

Tom, you're not helping. ;) And just for that, we will NOT name him Tom if we get him. :)

Keep in mind that I am trying NOT to get this bird (I say with a slight smirk on my face) so I have NOT considered cage locations, but our birds are out every night with us in the family room anyway so it wouldn't be a huge deal.

Awww it sounds like the connection between your son and his Sun is exactly what they both need! It's inevitable! *grins*

"Get the bird... Get the bird..."

*smacking my own hand*...

Ahem.... "Don't get the bird..." Drat. I'm not too convincing am I? *SIGH* Sorry about that...

My little sun Phoenix only really screeches when I get home and after dinner when she usually gets let out to play. I know the mantra of "No more birds...", but we are already considering how to get a couple more.... The only thing standing in our way is the money involved... *sigh*

None of you are helping, LOL!

Yes, money is definitely an issue for us, although I know my son will try to get around it by saying that he wants to use his own money, which he's been saving like a miser for years for "just the right thing".

There's also the small matter of the Hahns Macaw who is still at the breeder but will be coming home within the next couple of weeks. I've been waiting months for him and he will definitely be my main focus in the upcoming weeks.

In reality, the major issue is my husband who is really the one who made the "no more birds" proclamation. If it were solely up to me (and thank heavens it's not) we would probably have no room in our home for people. LOL

My husband and I always say no more birds before we go to the bird store to just get some toys and check out her new guys but on the way there he asks me which one I would want if we happen to find one there and lays down the groud rules first. So far we have come home with 2 more birds then planned and we are going back again. He was very honest about this up coming trip though saying he is coming home with something with feathers hopefully we can find a toy with feathers for him lol. He is currently deployed so he is missing the birds so why not add more lol.
