Update on rescued Nanday Conure

I had another thread in the rescue section about what we "thought" was going to be a hahns macaw but is actually a Nanday Conure..

I have posted photos in that link but will re-post them as well as the video that was made of her..

People from all over the world are pulling for this little one and I'm happy to say she has a name ..."little one" in spanish translated is "Nina" :)

Her vet report has come back and shows severe dehydration(we knew this on first sight and she was given 10 cc of warm saline upon arrival at the Avian Vet)...her monosite/white blood cell count is highly elevated which is an indication of inflammation somewhere inside - she is on .02 cc Baytril twice a day for the next two weeks..the vet hopes this will help fight off whatever infection may be there..

This morning she did not plunge into her food as eagerly as she did the first day and a half - this is a good sign that the hunger is subsiding and she will actually "taste" her food now :)

She is still a bit wobbly but has had no falls and has NOT plucked a single feather - her bottom/legs/under both wings and halfway up her chest were plucked - I'm happy to say we can see a few tiny tuffs of green on her bottom and about 4 new pins on the side of her cheek...

Her eyes are nice and clear and she appears curious to her surroundings this morning - she still is sleeping in between eating, but considering all that she has been through she "needs" as much rest as she can get..

We will continue to post updates as the weeks go by...

Thanks for the update! I've been thinking about her. Does the vet think her poor little head feathers will grow back? (didn't know if there was a way to tell or if you just have to kind of wait and see. I know her head feathers are the least of your worries right now - I was just curious.) Is there anything she needs that we could help with? I'd be more than happy to make her a few toys and send to you.

OMG, my heart is breaking for this poor sweet little Nanday! I went to your other thread to get the full story, I could strangle people like that! Especially since I know first hand how sweet Nandays are.

I am glad you are taking good care of her, she deserves to be loved!

How is she doing? We do worry when we hear about birds who have been treated like this. How about an update?

Any News??? My thoughts have been with you the last couple days. Is there more mental illness out there than I wish to imagine???? No one but someone struggling with illness could possibly do something like this. I hope the charges stick, in the meantime all we can do is pray that people like this see the light so to speak.

I'm very sorry for not updating..I have been incredibly busy with alot of different things..very rude of me :(

She finished all her meds and we took her back to the vet last week for another blood panel - the results came back showing her monocytes had gone UP not down despite the meds..she is still wobbly but not as bad as she was although the right leg being so weak is of concern..her appetite is still good but not as ravenous - shes only today stared eating "dry" pellets versus having them mushed - she decided she didn't like harrisons but has a preference for zupreem wild/spicy..the red ones lol..on the plus side, she went from 113 to 118 grams in 16 days! Thats 5% of her total body mass..

She goes today at 2:20 for an x-ray in order to rule out signs of PDD and possibly TB..we of course are worried that she may have something going on inside that can't be fixed...but shes one heck of a fighter to have come back from deaths door literally..
I will have more photos/video later tonight or tomorrow of the vet visit ..

Speaking of ...a report has been filed with our SPCA/ASPCA and the previous owner WILL be investigated this week - based on information obtained thus far, she will be having any pets in her home seized and she WILL be charged with neglect/failing to provide the necessities of life to an animal..I am thrilled that she will be stopped and the animals in her care will be looked after..

There is one other woman involved with this story who has a BG Macaw - on further investigating, this woman has TWO prior complaints and will most likely be having the BG taken into custody as well..if needed, we will provide a safe house for the BG short term, but because of the daily care and needs both emotionally and financially for Nina we cannot take on another bird for longterm care at this point..although some unbelievably kind people have sent donations towards Ninas vet bills..

I am amazed at the people I have met so far online since Nina came to us - she has truly touched lives around the world - with the new charges coming against the previous owner - she has also "saved" lives..without her, we would not have been led to these people..

Thank you to everyone for keeping her in your thoughts and prayers and I "promise" to be better at the updates!!

Anna and Nina
