Apartment?

Hey

Would a patagonian conure be suited to apartment life? How are they as far as dustiness?

As far as for an apartment, I have been told that the best suited conures are from the green cheek family. Yellow sided conures/black capped conures/etc.. provided they are from that family of green cheek conures you should be okay. As for dust of the above mention, not a problem at all.

But as I have found with mine is her pellets tend to get all over the place, so if you are looking for something that doesn't make a mess or requires constant clean up, then maybe a bird is not the best option.

For it is not how they look that matters especially when living in an apartment, it is the neighbours. Be wise in whatever you plan on bringing home, for you do not want to be forced into re-homing your bird as a result fo noise.

The smaller pyrrhura conures, are quieter.

Pyrrhura l. auricularis (Monagas White-eared Conure)

The dustiness, I think you are referring to, comes from species like cockatiels and toos. They have a dust in their feathers. Other than normal shedding off of the feather shafts during moulting, conures don't have that dust.

All see/pellets mixtures however, will create a certain amount of dust.

Wonderful, playful, very quiet birds are the parrotlets. They have all the personality with less noise. You could check them out. The following link is from an breeder in the area. Her rep is very good.

Also one of the quieter conures is a blue crown conure.

Another species of pyrrhura conure that should be on that list is the painted conure.

I've got 2 green cheeks and they are fine in an apartment. There is almost no dust from them. My cockatiels are a completely different story...

Conures for Apartments

I have a black capped conure and he is so perfectly suited for an apartment. He is fairly quiet compared to other species. He is certainly much quieter than my last conure. The apartment is his home and he has his favorite spots he usually flocks to. Not real big on wandering. I keep his wings clipped to avoid having him fly into walls or windows. To me he is the best suited conure for an apartment.

No way can a Patty be an apartment bird. We use to have a Patty and live in a home on one acre and our neighbors complained.
