New Baby GCC!

Hi everyone, I just got a baby green cheek! She's a female hatched in May. We named her Midori. This is my first baby! Any advice on working with a baby would be wonderful.. She's doing great, my husband and i have had her for a week now. We work with her outside the cage daily and she is really catching on to 'step up' lol. I will post pics this week!

Congrats... pics! pics! lol...

So have you or the breeder had her dna sexed to confirm it's a she? Just be patient. Read everything you can. I just got my first GCC about a month and a half ago... and no matter what all I read I discovered I didn't know squat. I will recommend this website, The Rational Parrot , if you haven't found it yet. I would highly recommend to read throughout it... I personally agree with 98% of what's on there.

Other than that, if you have any questions, let us know! And welcome!

Congratulations and welcome to BirdBoard.

Babies are exactly that - babies - so they are somewhat clumsy and explorative and may occasionally be testing.

The hardest thing to deal with is usually nipping (or biting) with a green cheek. Persistance is the key. I removed the beak from my flesh with a "no nipping" whenever it happened and over time the frequency and intensity of the nipping decreased. Keep in mind that as a baby there is no intention to hurt - usually it is an exploration type of thing... If a green cheek intends to hurt then they have no problem drawing blood...

If she came clipped I would "grow out" the clip to encourage flight (or ask the breeder if she was able to fledge properly). Although you *may* want to keep her clipped, allowing flight when young teachs her some necessary skills if you ever want her to fly properly in the future.

Also check out Monica's Bird Safe Fresh Foods & Toxic Food Lists + Sprouts for information on parrot diet.

I also recommend reading: The Rational Parrot from beginning to end. It doesn't take long and gives good insight into parrot behaviour.

Finally - simply enjoy her! Mine is a real cuddler and we enjoy our morning cuddles together... http://www.birdboard.com/forum/blogs...-cuddling.html

Congratts on your new addition. They will go threw a nippy phase. Mine is right now, she is extremely irritable. She also likes to nip but once you learn their behavior of being in a good mood or a bad mood will help you determine when to play with her and when to leave her alone. Their head feathers stick up when they are mad.

Your getting some good info already and just learn as much as possible. They are a joy to have. I just got my conure, Boomer two weeks ago and she is adorable but very nippy and hormonal. Keep taking her out every day and teaching her tricks like step up, they are VERY smart birds and pick up things fast. You can teach them a TON of things.

Getting them at a young age is great but I did a sort of rescue with mine. She was not in the best condition and very frail and not fed properly. Very thin and sickly looking. I think she was abused and/or ignored. But you will find you will bond with them very quickly. I love my little one. But be aware ALL go threw a nippy stage and it is nothing you did wrong. You may need some help with this.

Congrats! I think you'll find a ton of info here, from many perspectives. Use what works for you and your bird. My GCC is almost a year old..it's hard to believe!! She's great...has brought me a lot of happiness. Yes, they can be nippy. Just know that being gentle in teaching them and using only positive reinforcement is the best way to go (IMO). Rayne is a little clown, VERY smart, and loves to please. She also likes to get her way, though. I hope you have many years of fun with your baby!!

Thank you all for the advice, I will put up some pics tonight :) Dori is doing great, she loves her head scratches, is really catching on to the step up and down commands, and was a cuddle bug last night lol falling alseep on my shoulder grinding her beak :) My husband and I are in love with this little girl! Yes she was DNA sexed from the breeder- I have the certificate from the company that did it. She came from an aviary in Miami, FL. Well thanks again for all your advice, i promise to be back on later with some pics.
