Question Where in your house is your cage?

I have read a great deal about places in the home to *not* have cages, so I thought I would ask where people *do* have them.

I read that:
  • Don't put the cage by a window
  • Don't put the cage by a heating vent
  • Don't put the cage in the kitchen
  • Don't put the cage away from the main living area

My concern is that I have a nice large family room, and I think this would be a great space, but I don't want the new Sun Conure to not get enough sleep here.

Any thoughts?

Cookie lives in my, eerr, *her* room.

Have you thought about a sleep cage? she can have a nice big cage in the family room, and get lots of interaction, and then when its time for her to sleep you can just use a small cage in another quiet room. (you could even use a roomy travel cage!) I know alot of people do this with success!

Mine are all in my family room where I spend most of my time. They like to be around you.

Neko's cage is in our second family room and Oliver and Emi are upstairs in the landing. Their play stands are in our main living room, where we spend all our time. That is also where they spend all their time when we are home, which is most of the time. We sort of use their cages as a "sleep cage". They have a nice quiet room to retreat to when its time for bed and where they wont be bothered by the TV or us talking. Both the cages are in front of windows right now (all my birds like to sit on the sill and watch the outdoors) but that will change soon with winter coming - we have bad drafts so we gotta keep the birds safe.

Umm, let me see.

Arthur (CAG), Merlin (Ekkie), Bogey (YCA), Arora (RB2) plus babies and/or weaning rehab future companions are in the bird room, weaning babies seem to have ended up in the lounge room, hahns girls are near the back door.

The hahns girls (being a bit of a rehab project) are doing slow get use to people so being in a high traffic area they are calming with people, cat and dogs walking past all the time. Babes who will be companions in the lounge room are used to noise and the general going ons of a family by the time they leave here.

Works for me, pity about my carpet.

Sleep cage! haha everyone around here knows how passionately I feel about them. Go on Craigslist and find yourself a cheap budgie cage for about $10-$20... mine is 24" long x 14" deep x 14" tall. I have a sleep hut, a perch, and a water bottle in there. I don't even have to change the paper because she never uses the bathroom in it. This stays in my bedroom and every night around 10pm she goes in there. Birds are extremely light sleepers and can be awoken by anything - it's a defense mechanism. I swear by it... I am a college grad student and stay up late studying, and I don't know how she'd handle being out here with me. But yes, you want the day cage in your primary living area.

Read this, it goes into great detail as to why they are so good.

Abbey's cage is in the dining room but it is apart of the living room. She decides when she wants to go to sleep and wake up. But she always 10 to 12 hours of sleep. Abbey has run of are house so she does as she pleases.

Thank you for the information so far! I have a corner in my family room picked out for his/her main cage, and the sleep-cage seems like a great idea. The only dilemma I see for myself (human training portion), is that I generally watch TV in my bedroom before going to bed, I would think this might disturb him/her.

I think the misconception about keeping a cage near a window is inaccurate. If those are the "no no" places to keep a cage then I have no where to put mine! LOL! Well, (and I know I'm gonna catch some flack for this) my cages are in the 'dining room' near the kitchen and living room (in front of the windows). Guess I don't see what's wrong with them near a window (besides, people do it all the time). I think it really depends on what YOU think is best for your situation.

Try putting the sleep cage in your closet and keep the TV down low. Or what I do now is lay down on the couch and pretty much fall asleep and sometime during the night move to my bedroom. I have a TV in my bedroom... I really don't know why. It's never on.
