Some Advice on Jenday

So as many of you know I recently won a Jenday conure in a raffle (yes they actually raffled off a live bird). The first couple days he was an absolute sweetheart, anyone could pick him up.

The last two days he has started biting, full on blood drawing bites. This is my first Jenday, we have actually never had any come into the rescue.

He runs at you from the inside of the cage and if he gets you he latches on like a rabid wolf that hasn't eaten in 2 days. Even out of the cage he will bite, but not quite as much.

Could this be his personality showing. It makes me wonder if that is why he was donated for the raffle.

I hate that I can offer advise to other people, but when it is my bird I am dumb founded and doubting myself.

Xaf says "That's normal, do not scold him. Offer your hand freely. Be one with the bite."

*I* say... Jendayas can be very aggressive with changes and when they test, they go full out. He might be going through a pissy period, or he might be a breedy monster, or he might just be mean and his nature is coming forth.

Patience will win out.. but, if it doesn't, you learn to live with it. Xaf's a mean psychopath but endearing all the same. I would give him some space and let him make the first moves. I also would give him a lot more time to get used to things. Jendayas aren't as ditzy happy as Suns.

I didn't hear about this raffle thing!! How odd! It is a possibility that he was offered up because of his biting, but you have seen what a sweetie he can be so don't be discouraged.
Has anything changed that could be bothering him? People have been discussing their birds are molting, maybe he is uncomfortable. Is there a new toy in there that could be stressing him?
Maybe he is feeling more settled and more comfortable showing his "true" colors. But with patience and work I am sure he can be a lovable bird again. I would rack your brain first and see if there are any factors that could be attributing to his moodiness

Sounds like he is terrified!! Did they tell you anything about his background like where he came from and how old he might be? If you don't know anything about his background, it's hard telling what kind of situation he was in before you got him. What he is going to need is time, time and more time! I wouldn't try to touch him unless it is a must do situation, it will probably stress him to the max. It might take him a couple weeks or longer to come around. Right now I would try to train him to step up on a stick or dowl that way when you need to clean the cage, feed, or put water in you don't get bit, or at least you will be less likely to get bit. An when your near him just talk to him in a clam voice and praise him for being good. I think he just needs some time and his space, and hopefully he will come around for you! Good luck, keep us posted.

Thanks, I will give him more time/space. He has a home regardless of his true nature. I had never heard that about Jendays, so it is good to know. I might end up calling him Xaf Junior if he keeps up this behavior and I will invest in more bandaids.

I tried to be one with the bite, but that ended in a large gash on my thumb. Funny thing was later that day the Gold Capped tried to remove the hanging skin from my thumb wound.

MLaCross...Yep, I went to the bird fair last weekend and thought I had entered in the raffle for items (food, toys, etc), next thing I know I am being given a Jenday conure. I can't say that I was mad about winning, but I was mad that a parrot was part of the raffle.

Rockysmom...He was purchased by a breeder and they tried to pair him up with a Sun conure. The Sun attacked him so the breeder put him in the raffle. He came in a parakeet cage, which the breeder said, "It's an okay size, but you could go bigger." He is now in a large flight cage.

I know he needs time to settle in, I guess this is like when your own kid is sick...you tend to worry more and doubt yourself, but when a someone else's kid is sick you can offer level headed advice.

I was pretty shocked, I had seen him in the cage at the fair when I first got there, but I just thought he was for sale with the other various parrots that are there. We are very happy to have him and this will be his last home.
