there are two genus of conures. The aratinga and the the pyrrhua. Both birds you mentioned are from the aratinga genus. Birds from this group tend to be loud. Some, esp. the Nanday are very loud. Suns are known to be screamers at times too. The birds from this group are little clowns, can talk well and are alot of fun. You have to outway the good with the bad. If you encounter one of these birds with a screaming habit, it is ear piercing to say the least.
The pyrrhua group tend to be a little smaller in size. Yes they can scream but no where near what the other group is capable of. They do have the ability to talk and are real snuggle bugs. Remember all parrots make noise. You have to decide what an acceptable level is for you. Not all birds scream, cuddle, bite. Some do all of these.

There's a way to make the loudness of your conures a very minor issue. Check out the link in my signature.

The Nanday isn't an ara.. it has its own genus. All of the aras and the Nanday are LOUD. The sound proofing would work if in a bedroom. However, if your bird is in the main living area (livingroom, etc) it wouldn't work that way. I wouldn't recommend them for apartments... I have a Sun that is a 'normal' screamer and one that is ear piercing. No way to know which one you'll end up with. (Unless it's an adult already and you've heard it) There are many on youtube.. watch a few videos with the volume turned all the way up. Then double it. This will go on during TV time, during phone conversations, and conversations in the room. They yell when they want to... don't buy into that they only scream twice a day... although I won't say they scream 'all day' either.

Check them out in person if you can. Remember.. babies are quieter than adults! My Jenday is by far the loudest of all my birds, though... I think it's just him. Have you seen the movie "Push"? You remember the kids who scream and glass shatters?? Kinda like that, LOL!

Actually, the sound proofing set up I found works to reduce the noise both inside as well as outside of the room (that's the whole point since my room IS my main living room). No more piercing loud noise inside, and no more echoing vibrations outside. So if you have it in the living room, at will definitely keep the rest of the house much quieter while making it tolerable in that room.

Although, given the choice, I would rather set up a dedicated bird room. Until I can afford that, I had to devise ways to make the best out of what is currently the case.

Carbon,

Has anyone yet commented on the elegance the sheets add to your room decorating and the warmth they add to the cage?

Well done!

I have a sun conure and he is LOUD! I have also had to do a lot of work with him to get him to quiet down a bit. It is very easy to give a bird the idea that his screaming is working, so a lot of it is being patient. I live in an apartment, I am sure there are times that my neighbors hate me though. You can't train a bird to not scream at all, it is their nature, but you can reduce it.

You are correct Jag, concerning the nanday being of it's own Genus. I wasn't thinking properly. Sorry.

Haha I know they're not the best decorative item out there, but trust me the convenience they add to my life is more than worth their raggedy looks. Nara seems to like it, as the whole thing feels like a hut now. She keeps making cooing sounds.

Nanday's should be aratinga. Seriously!

Even the quietest Nan/Aratinga is going to have the -potential- to be loud.

You ask what's loud? Here ya go:

Xaf will demonstrate. My video cam speaker could not handle his screams.

YouTube - xafsmom's Channel

Imagine that, amplified "in person" non-stop until your ears ring and your eyes bleed.

That's the potential of a Jendaya (which Xaf is) and a Nanday.
