Sun Conure Endangered species question

Hey,

So I noticed a few months back that the Sun Conure was uplisted to "Endangered Species" in the 2008 IUCN Red List. I remember reading a long time ago about endangered species being illegal to own. So, if one were to own one from before they became endangered, is there a law being broken in continuing to own one? Just wondering....

Brad

hmmm, i don't know the answer to this. i don't even know if it is indeed illegal to own one, but i suspect it isn't since they are freely sold in major pet stores.

Also some private owners have the rare spix macaw and that is next to extinct so I doubt that it is breaking the law. But sun conures are plentiful out there... Well in the pet trade that is I'm not sure about in the wild hmmmm.

I would guess that the law would apply to wild-caught Sun conures, not those that are already present in aviculture. I can see why it should be illegal to capture them in the wild, but why would it be made illegal to buy them from breeders? Unless the intention would be to get all of those and try to release them back in the wild (highly unlikely), it doesn't make sense.

I agree if a bird is captive bred, people should be fine.

It's 'just' endangered on Cites II. That means it's working for protection in its natural habitat. There are no currently limitations or restrictions involved for captive bred/domestic bred birds here.
