Flight Suits and Weather tolerance???
Well, for the second day in a row I have gotten my Widget into his first flight suit, yesterday it is fair to say he was not a happy camper, but I was firm and relentless and he got to wear it. I left it on until he took treats and stepped up without any problems, probably about 15-20 minutes.
Today went about 85% better, only bit me slightly, and is tolerating it VERY well today. I brought him upstairs to my bedroom as his reward...not nearly as good as outside, but I am determined to be able to take him out so he can enjoy the outdoors at some point. Unfortunately now, probably not until spring :( Here is my next question, what is the temperature tolerance for outside this time of year? I would love to take him outside, but am afraid temperatures in the 50's are too cold. I could look it up in one of my multitude of books, but its been a long day, I was hoping for just a quick answer. I'm so sorry I didn't get the suit a few weeks ago when the weather was better. Also, do many of you take your birds out in public or is it too risky for germs? I've seen that some people rig up their cars so the birds can perch with their harnesses on and go for a ride, I'm thinking that might be an option for us. I could put him in my coat to get him to the warm car... Any other helpful ideas or suggestions are greatly appreciated. Denise |

from what i understand, a general rule is that they are comfortable in the temperature we are naturally comfortable in. so, this would not be the right time to take him outside. but, just so you know, they can readily acclimate to cooler temps, but this requires a very gradual introduction.
we don't really take our Jenday out much except for the necessities (vet trips, wing and nail clippings at the pet store). mainly this is because he doesn't like car ride (guess he's just not used to them). also, i have to admit i am a little concerned about germs at the pet store, but i guess if proper precautions are taken the risk is very minimal. lastly, if you want to take him for a car ride, i would put him in a travel cage since even if he has a harness on he can still bounce around (especially if he gets scared), which could affect the driver and/or he could get hurt. and, bundling him up (while he's in the travel cage) in a jacket or blanket to get him to the already warmed car is a good idea for the winter months.
