i know this thread is kind of old, but can anyone tell me how to weave rope like that? I've only seen those nets made with knots, but it looks like she actually weaved it together. Can you describe the process of weaving the rope together and what tools you used?

it's a great net, thanks for all the pictures.

You should think about making more and selling that setup! Those things are way expensive if you try to buy them retail. it looks great! I'm assuming you don't leave it up all the time (seems to cut your living room in 1/2 and cut off the TV from view a bit).

Bravo.... Where did you get the rope. I want to make something similar, except just place it above my fids cage as a playgym....

The rope consists of three strands. Each of the 3 strands has dozens of strands woven together. I only worked with the three main strands. When I started the cross weaving I unwove the three strands about 1/2 way across the length then began in the middle.

Brute strength of untwisting the rope only where I was pushing the strands thru. In other words, just twisting it the opposite direction in the area I was working in. No tools other than my hands. Once I finished the one half of each cross width I unwove the other side and finished it.

The only ropes that actually were unwoven were the horizontal ropes.

Tying knots was never consider because just one half knot on one rope took up 18 inches of rope. Too much wasted rope and with knots that big it would have looked stupid.

POWERBBS, any chance you noticed above where I said I would never make another of this size???? Not a chance in ****!!!!

When the weather is warm it will go on the front porch since the birds spend a lot of time out there. Where it was hanging in the family room you are right, it did partially obscure the TV. I fixed that by clipping it in a few feet. Well Sammy (scarlet) loved the area where the rope was doubled so much that I decided to weave it in and keep that side like it. Hard to explain but just envision the top end piece weaved back in to the 3rd vertical rope. It makes a cozy little spot.

I recently moved it to the far end of the family room so it no longer hangs thru the center of the room. We rearranged the furniture because we were bored with it the way it was. ;)

Just so happens some pictures were taken this evening so you can look and get an visual.

With the holiday hustle and bustle I haven't put anymore thought in to how to finish the ends. The birds don't seem to mind so I'm in no rush. Sometimes they unwind the ends when they play and then it is a contest to see if I can reweave it before the get over to where I am. We've made a game of it and actually, I like it.

Oh and YES, it is always up.

It just seems weird, maybe I am not looking at it the right way....

thank you for the explanation, and by the way I love your nails; I too love getting designs put on my nails.

I admit I still don't really "get it" but that is probably mostly because I do not have rope in my hands right now.

Thank you for the reply and again, thanks for the pics! They make such a big difference in these DIY threads! Pictures make it so interesting. Thanks.
