If you have a dremel tool - you can grove the pipe which he will be standing on - cut fine ridges in the pipe - you have to be careful not to cut too deeply into the pipe though. I have never been able to figure out how to heat the PVC enough to twist it - twisting it also gives enough traction for them to hold onto. Hope this helps!!
Can you get him used to seeing the blue vetwrap by training him with it - put near his cage so that he will get used to seeing it and progress from there to getting him to step up onto the actual perch? Just a thought!!

I have also seen people use wooden dowels in place of the PVC just for the perch part....they are inexpensive enough that when dirty could be changed out for new ones.

You could also get some sisal rope or hemp and wrap it tightly around the pvc. It won't mold or anything even if it gets wet, and if it gets dirty, you could always stick it in the sink with some acv or soapy water...

course sand paper, twist as you turn it,or just pull for stright groves,to twist with heat use heat gun, hair dryer won't do it,run smaller doll thru it so it don't get to bad from shape you want, make sure doll is much smaller or won't come out after cooling.make sure you have gloves on when heating.

I like to take a cutting disc on a dremel and score it long ways. Long grooves haphazardly give it a wood grain look and it works great some deeper than others. This way it is easy to do, easy to clean as well. Its not hard at all and the cutting discs can be found at anywhere you find dremels. CAUTION: wear LONG sleeves and safty glasses and I even tied a bandanna around my face. The flying bits of PVC ARE HOT! But it is easy and looks good. Some guy at the bird fairs has neat stuff and he has given it a burned look somehow makes it look like wood. Cant figure it out. Makes great shower perches with plastic palm branches hanging over the top and the grooved PVC is all brown like. Looks really margaritavillelike,LOL.
