Here are some links to some sites that have toy parts and rope. I think for the multi colored you could just get regular rope and dye it with food coloring.

Colored Marine poly rope

The colored marine rope is available at Wal-Mart, Home Depot and marine stores; also have the plain cotton rope in several sizes. When there were instructions to make an Atom ball, they said they got the marine rope at Wal-Mart in the boat section. Each pack of rope is 3/8 diameter, 25 foot long; 2 packs of each color was used. These are also available at Lowes, and other stores. Look under The Hoopball...A DIY Project at the pictures and see the rope in several colors.

I thought that for bird use - that poly rope was bad and a big no-no - due to the trace metals which have been found in the rope???? If anyone has any knowledge about this and can point me in a definitive direction I would be very grateful!!!!

Well, I don't know about trace metals, but if so, then all those people making atoms and other playgyms would be making a huge mistake. I would guess that someone will let us know, but for now, the poly rope is shown in many DIY gyms and other toys. So please let us know.
