Cool Parrotlet Play Gym

I couldnt help but feel that all the play gyms were too expensive. So i took my dad to the parrot store and all he could say was "$150?!?!?! ITS WORTH IT!" But none the less, i convinced him to help me make my own parrotlet play gym. we took notes of some we liked online and then headed to Home Depot. It cost only $60 and was a weekend well spent with my dad, especially since I dont see a lot of him.

The base of each level is similar stuff to a book case shelf. the pine siding of each level is for base boards. The parrotlet cannot reach any of the brass screws or zinc nails - though i am still concerned about them. Home Depot didnt carry any of the right pieces in stainless steel.

Another concern is that the toy hanging parts are made of oak because they didnt carry thin pine dowels. Someone on the Parrot Forum said oak was fine if the parrot didnt chew it and if it were dry. I am still nervous about it.

If all else fails, the parrotlet doesnt get to use it but I'll still have the good times with my dad. It will hurt his feelings though. He just doesnt seem to get that some of these things will kill my baby.

well.. if anyone has any input about the risks of letting my p'let, Jade play on this, let me know. I dont get her for another week. I dont want to kill her. I would be devastated. I just want her to be spoiled and happy.

Just dont let her chew on it. My guys dont chew on wood they prefer softer things, I have a half eaten pinata (from the pet store) they love to chew on. I would hang approved toys for Jade to play with. You could wrap parts with vet wrap if she tries to chew. Vetwrap is the stretchy stuff we wrap our horses legs with, you can get it from vets or horse supply places. Good luck, it is awesome!

If you're worried then as ndeben said, just wrap it in vet wrap. Hang lots of toys on it and they would probably distract her from chewing. It looks fantastic, I'm sure Jade will have lots of fun!

That came out beautiful. My guys will think they are neglected if they ever see a picture of it.

Vet tape is an excellent idea! My dad loved helping me figure things out. I tried to convince him that we could make them to sell. If we did, we would look into ordering pine dowels and stainless steel pieces online. His eyes got really big, like "yeah right! this took forever!"

But we didnt "assembly line" the process. I thing its a cool idea! but i live too far away to help and he works too much.

Glad you guys like it! i passed that on to my dad and he seemed pleased that my Bird Friends approved.
