I've made cloth perches out of things as well only I sew them into a tube and then stuff them with old t-shirts so they are fully washable. They are great and my birds love them. Fleece works really well for this.
One of my tiels' favorite toys is some cut up pieces of drinking straws strung on cotton rope. They love it and will sit and chew on the straws forever. My guys like pretty much anything with straws but they are kind of weird, lol. Pony beads, bells, shreddable things, newspaper, pretty much anything. The straw hats you get at the craft store are really great but you do have to check them occasionally since they are made with string. My birds also like unbleached coffee filters made to look like a flower. I take some filters and seperate them and put them back together again. Then I fold them in half, half again and tie on the end. They like to preen them and rip the paper up. I don't have any pictures right now but I can take some tomorrow if that didn't make sense, lol.
Really whatever your imagination can come up with works. I used to sit for hours trying to think of one toy to make and then I realized it really doesn't matter. They like the toys I make more than the store bought anyday and the nice thing is they don't care what it looks like! It helps me a lot since I have tiels that think they are macaws and want all their toys to be HUGE so they can hang from them and swing around but they don't make big toys for little birds.
I just made some toys last night but haven't gotten pics yet, I'll take some tomorrow since all the fids are in bed right now.
