Making a Harness for your bird.
I made a harness for my sun conure this morning and then tested it outside. It worked fantastic. I just wanted all who have smaller birds that harness dont seem to fit or are too hard to get on. I had a flight suite for my conure but it seemed really hot and it held his crap right next to him...not good. I think this is really straight forward and fairly comfortable for the bird. Okay, for starters, I will have a picture for you to go by.
1 or 2 ft of small elastic band
1 jewelery repair kit
1 small D-ring
1 small stainless steel ring (1/4 in wide)
sewing kit
What I basically did was take one strip of the elastic band and measured 7 inches of it and cut a piece. From there, I cut another stip about 3.5 inches. These two peices will be swen together to make the neckline. Place the 3.5 in strip in the middle of the 7 inch strip. Tack the two together at the ends of the 3.5 strip. The two strip will lay next to each other and be able to open to a circle when you spread them apart. This goes over the neck and shoulders.
From there you cut another 3.5 inch peice of elastic and sew it at one of the ends of the neck peice. This part will go around the tail/stomach. This peice should be perpendicular to the neck peice. Refer to the picture. At the other end of the neck peice sew on the small stainless steel ring.
On the peice of elastic that goes around the tail, sew on both ends a ring with a necklace clasp attached to it. I also added the the D-ring to the back of the harness to clip a leash too. I just sewed it on. That is it! If you have questions, please ask! I might not have stated all the details.
Spread the neck peice apart and place over the birds head. Have them step up onto a perch and slide the bottom between the legs. Attach the clasps behind the wings to the steel ring. Of course they might struggle, but I did it, so its possible. I took him for a long walk around campus and he enjoyed it!
PS. the green in the picture is where I sewed.
